Kalmyk society consisted of several tribal unions – Torhout, 

hooty  and  derbety.  And  the  bulk  of  them  were  torgouts. 

Administratively,  the  Kalmyk  state  consisted  of  ulus.  Ulus 

was  the  possession  of  the  Kalmyk  ruler  and  his  vassals-

lords (Taisha). Ulus consisted of aimag, which is controlled 

sayangi. The aimag was distinguished by the ulus Noyon, 

which was the suzerain for the zaisang. The latter in turn 

was a vassal of the former. Further, the aimags were divided 

into hotons. Haughton consisted of about a dozen to several 

dozen  related  families.  Often  the  haughtons  were  named 

after the most senior and authoritative person.
