ДЖУЧИ, ХАН-СУЛТАН И
НеСОСТОЯВШИЙСЯ ПОХОД НА ЗАПАД
Jochi, Khan-Sultan and the failed campaign to the west
Abstract
The article is devoted to the last years of Jochi’s life and his marriage to
the daughter of the Khorzmshah Muhammad Khan-Sultan. The author comes
to the conclusion that the marriage was concluded just before the beginning
or during the military operation to seize Khorezm, which was to become
part of Jochi’s possessions. Apparently, the founder of the empire intended
to divide the lands captured during the Mongol-Khorezm war between
Jochi and Chagatai, to whom the two daughters of Sultan Muhammad were
also transferred. But, the competition between the brothers began to get
out of control already during the conquest of Khorezm, and Ogedei was
appointed senior. Then Jochi headed west, having an order from Genghis
Khan to conquer Desht-i-Kypchak, Volga Bulgaria, Saksin and Russian
principalities. With a high degree of probability, the plan was that in 1223
the Jochi army would join the corps of Jebe and Subedei, which in turn
was to break through the Caucasus and strike the Kypchaks from the south.
We do not know why Jochi did not complete his part of the operation, but
apparently, this was followed by his conflict with his father and brothers, and
a mysterious death. It was during this completely or partially unsuccessful
march to the west that Khan-Sultan had a son, Berke, who was later destined
to lead his father’s Ulus.
