The current article considers the theories of textual genesis and intertextuality of J. Kristeva as a direct
evolution of tradition that was developed in the fi rst half of the XX century. Here tradition is regarded
as a particular space of simultaneous coexistence and continuous cooperation among different works of
literature. In the course of research the author analyzes the principles of literary work formation and their
mutual infl uence as stated in the theory of the French poststructuralist philosopher. The author concludes
that Kristeva’s concept represents tradition as a chaotic and dynamic fi eld that serves as a fundamental
construct for any new work of literature. Consequently any literary work inevitably implicates a variety
of citations in its structure and thus establishes an immanent connection with the general cultural-textual
tradition. The undertaken study suggests a unique amorphous existence and non-temporal ontological
status of the elements that form the general literary tradition, their direct engagement in the development
of new works of literature, as well as validates ample opportunities of literary art interpretation.
