э.), Посидония (I в. до н.э.), Юлия Цезаря (I в. до н.э.), Тацита (I в. н.

(Great Britain).

Devonport, Portsmouth.

е. West Saxons), Сасэкс (Sussex, т.е. South Saxons) и Эссекс (Essex, т.е. East Saxons).

Northumberland (North of the river Humber) – графство современной Великобритании, частично покрывающее территорию древней Нортумбрии.

Buckingham - the home (OE hām) of the Buckings, Birmingham - the home of the Birmings, Huntington - the town (OE tūn) of the Huntings, Kensington - the town of the Kensings.

Tuesday < OE Tiwesdæg (the day of Tiw, Germanic god of war;

Wednesday < OE Wodandæg (the day of Woden, Germanic god of wind);

Thursday < OE Thunorsdæg (the day of Thunor, Germanic god of thunder);

Friday < OE Frīdæg (the day of Frei, Germanic goddess of love);

Saturday < OE Sæternesdæg (the day of Saturn).

Sunday < OE Sunnandæg (the day of the Sun);

Monday < OE Sunnandæg (the day of the Moon).

Oswald, Alfred, Ethel, Osborne.

EVENTS OF EXTERNAL HISTORY

Pre-Germanic Britain

Celtic Settlements in Britain

016. The history of the English nation dates from the fifth century when the tribes of the Anglo-Saxon invaders occupied Britain and established on the island their rule and their culture.
However the Anglo-Saxons were not the first to conquer Britain. The island had been inhabited long before, and the first inhabitants described in the written accounts of Pytheas (4th c. BC), Posidonius (1st c. BC), Julius Caesar (1st c. BC), Tacitus (1st c. AD) were the Celts.
The Celts came to Britain from the continent where in the 6th- 3d centuries BC they inhabited vast territories stretching from Eastern to Western Europe. There were three waves of Celtic migration to Britain. The first were the Gaels (cf. the name of ancient France - Gaul). The last of them were the Belgae [bel’dZi:] (cf. the name of the modern country Belgium). Between these two waves of migrants came the Britons. The Britons were the most numerous among the Celts, and eventually the word «Britons» was applied to all the Celts inhabiting the island. It also gave its name to the modern nation (the British) and its country (Great Britain).
The Britons lived in tribal communities (kinship groups). They hunted, kept heards of sheep and cultivated small fields of wheat.
By belief they were pagans. Their religion was kept by Druids, the priests who ruled the life of the community. The religion was rather cruel. It had the customs of human sacrifice and toturing the bodies of the prisoners.
017. The Britons spoke Indo-European dialects belonging to the Celtic group. A few Celtic languages are still spoken in some communities of Great Britain. They are found in Wales, Scotland and Cornwell, i.e. the areas to which the Britons were ousted by the Anglo-Saxon invaders. It is also for this reason that Wales, Cornwell and Scotland display the densiest distribution of place names containing Celtic element (See Diagram I). Such names can be easily recognized by the components llan (Celtic for «church»), comb (Celtic for «valley»), torr (Celtic for «rock»), pill (Celtic for «creek»), loch (Celtic for «lake»), e.g.: Llandaff, Batcomb, Duncomb, Torcross, Huntspill, Loch-ness.
Other Celtic names are Avon, Evon (Celtic for river), Exe, Usk (Celtic for «water»), York (Celtic for town), London (Celtic for «fortification on the river») – see celts.
Romans in Britain

018. The British Isles first attracted Roman legions in 54 BC during Julius Caesar’s war against the Gauls. Caesar wanted to punish the Britons who had their kinsmen among the Gauls and lent them aid in their fight with the Romans. On the other hand the Romans were attracted by the natural resourses (copper, tin, coal) of Britain.
The first Roman attempt to conquer Britain (August 55 BC) failed. Caesar did not manage to break the resistance of the Britons, and a year later (54 BC) he crossed the Chanell once again. The Roman legions made their way deep into the territory of the island and won several battles. However the military operations did not lead to the real conquest of Britain. Julius Caesar imposed a tribute upon the Britons (it is believed that the tribute was never paid) and withdrew his legions to Gaul.
In 43 AD the Roman troops under Emperor Claudius made another attempt to occupy Britain. This time the compaign was successful, and in due course the major part of the island (excluding the mountinous regions of Scotland) was made a province of the Roman empire.
019. Britain remained a Roman province for about 350 years. In the fifth century the empire suffered from the attacs of barbarians, and the troops staying in provinces were called to protect Rome. In 410 the last Roman legioners were withdrawn from the island, and Britons were left defenceless to the attacks of new invaders.
020. The Romans left Britain 16 centuries ago, but the map of England still preserves the evidence of their stay.

Thus, such names as Manchester, Lancaster, Leicester indicate former Roman fortifications. Their second elements chester, caster, cester originated from the Latin word castrum (L for military camp).

The names like Lincoln, Colchester have the elements which developed from the Latin word colonia (L for «settlement»).

Components of Latin origin are also found in the names like Greenwich, Norwich (wich developed from Latin vicus, «settlement»).

The Latin word strata (L for road) can be recognized in the names Stratford, Streetly; the Latin word portus (L for «port») is preserved in the place names like Devonport, Portsmouth – see romans.
The Anglo-Saxon settlement of Britain
The Conquest

021. The Germanic occupation of Britain began in the middle of the fifth century (449 according to the Bede’s Ecclesiastical history). The first waves of the invaders were headed by two Germanic chiefs Hengist and Horsa who had been engaged by a British king Vortigern to defend the Britons from the Picts. But the romanized Britain with its cultivated fields, neat villages and wealthy towns was a great temptation for the newcomers, so they turned their arms against the people they had been hired to protect.
The conquest was cruel and devastating. The invaders laid waste the fields and towns, plundered the churches, mercilessly killed the natives and burnt their houses. The Britons offered a fierce resistance, but the conquerors made persistent attacks on their strongholds, and by the end of the sixth century nearly all the areas of Britain had been occupied by the Germanic invaders. Those Britons who took part in the fight against the raiders were killed. Many others were made slaves and servants. The rest of the Britons were driven to the mountains of Wales, Scotland and Cornwall where they were able to defend themselves and preserve their culture, religion and language.
The conquerors were the tribesmen from the continent. They belonged to three Germanic races: the Angles, the Saxons and the Jutes. The Jutes inhabited the Northern part of what is now called the Jutland peninsula, the Angles its southern part, the Saxons occupied the stretch of coastland between the Rhine and the Elbe.
About a century and a half after their first attacks the Germanic conquerors divided the territory of Britain into seven kingdoms. The Saxons who occupied the south and the south-west of Britain established three kingdoms: Wessex (West Saxons), Sussex (south Saxons) and Essex (east Saxons). The Angles also formed three kingdoms. They were Mercia (the central part of the island), East Anglia (the eastern areas between the Wash and the mouth of the river Store) and Northumbria (the territory stretching from the Humber to the Firth of Forth). The seventh kingdom was called Kent. It was established by the Jutes who settled in the extreme south east of Britain – see angles.
The seven kingdoms existed for nearly two hundred years during the period known in the English history as the period of Heptarchy (from Greek hepta -seven and arkhia - power). They were constantly rivaling with each other for increase of territory. By the end of the eighth century the number of these kingdoms had been reduced to three: Northumbria, Mercia and Wessex. These three kingdoms continued their rivalry and each of them gained the supreme power on the island at different times.
The local wars exhausted the kingdoms to such a degree that in the forthcoming years the Anglo-Saxons were not able to offer a powerful resistance to the new invaders of Britain who came from Scandinavia.
Old English Dialects and Written Records

022. Unlike the Romans who did not interfere with the culture and the language of the Celts, the Anglo-Saxon tribesmen were merciless to the traditions of the native population. The Celtic languages came in disuse and all the layers of the population (including what was left of the Britons) adopted the dialects spoken by the conquerors. These dialects belonged to the same West Germanic group and were closely related to each other.
The development of these dialects in Britain displayed two contradictory tendencies. On the one hand these dialects influenced one another, and during their joint development acquired more and more common features. These features brought them closer and distinguished them from the Germanic dialects spoken on the continent. On the other hand the division of Britain into several feudal kingdoms and the separate development of these kingdoms promoted splitting the existing tribal dialects into a greater number of regional ones. The total of the regional dialects formed a single tongue which is referred to as the Old English, or the Anglo-Saxon language.
Note: There is also another point of view according to which the conquerors of Britain belonged to the same language community, and they developed their regional dialectal distinctions only in Britain.
There is not enough evidence that would give a definite idea of the exact number of OE dialects. Nor is there undoubted information concerning their boundaries. Most probably these dialects were spoken within the borderlines of either of the seven kingdoms. In accordance with this idea the dialects derive their names from the names of OE states.
The main of these dialects were Mercian, Kentish Northumbrian, and West Saxon – see dialects1.
The first three of them are reflected in a small number of written records. Thus the Mercian dialect is represented by religious glosses, the Kentish one by law charters, the Northumbrian dialect by Runic inscriptions of the Ruthwell Cross and the Franks Casket (sea also 029), Bede’s Death song, Caedmon hymn.
The written records of the West Saxon dialect are much more numerous. The most famous of them are the following.
The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle - a description of the events which took place in the eighth and the ninth centuries. It gives much valuable information for the historians and the linguists.
King’s Alfred’s Orosius - King Alfred’s translation or rather a rendering of The History of the World by the Spanish monk Orosius. The translation contains parts made by King Alfred himself. They tell the reader about the voyages of the Scandinavian seafarers Ohthere and Wulfstan. The stories give a clear idea about the geographical knowledge of King Alfred’s contemporaries.
Bede’s Ecclesiastical History of the English People - another translation by King Alfred. The original Historia Ecclesiastica Gentis Anglorum was written by the monk Bede. The work is one of the few that describe the events of the early history of Britain (6th- 7th centuries). Bede’s History is very valuable though it is rather simple and much of its information is out of harmony with other facts and archeological finds.
The Pastoral Care - one more translation by King Alfred. The author of the original (Cura Pastoralis) is Pope Gregory I. King Alfred accompanied the translation with his own foreword, where he speaks about the importance of learning.
Beowulf - a heroic poem about the fight of good against evil. The main character is Beowulf, a Scandinavian fellow. The plot centres around his fight with Grendel, a monster that terrified the people of Scandinavia. It is believed that the original of this poem belongs to the Scandinavian epos. But it did not survive. The available version represents the West Saxon dialect with the abundant insertions of Anglican forms.
Linguistic Evidence of the Anglo-Saxon Migration

023. As well as any other notable historic event the Anglo-Saxon migrations could not but leave their linguistic reflection on the geographical map. Even a cursory survey of the map of Europe will display a lot of geographical names suggestive of the events described in the foregoing narration.
Thus, such names as England, Anglesea (an island in the Irish Sea), Englefield (a village not far from Reading) are easily recognizable as derived from the stem «Angle». The name Jutland (the territory of modern Denmark) undoubtedly testifies that this peninsula was once inhabited by the Jutes. The Saxons left the evidence of their settlements in such geographical names as Saxony, Sussex, Essex, Middlesex. Saxony is the area in the North of Modern Germany, the territory from which the Saxons raided Britain. Sussex, Essex and Middlesex are counties in the south of England. The first two of them bear the names of OE kingdoms.
Such names as Suffolk and Norfolk also testify to the Germanic migration. They show that when making settlements in new territories the invaders assumed new names which were geographical rather than tribal or generic (North Folk, South Folk). The geographical principle of naming territories is also realized in the word Northumberland (North of the river Humber) which denotes one of the counties of Modern Britain partially covering the territory of ancient Northumbria.
However the generic principle was also widely used by the Anglo-Saxons. Many of the kinship groups used to give their villages (hāms or tūns) their own names. The modern map of Britain contains a great number of such names, e.g.: Buckingham - the home of the Buckings, Birmingham - the home of the Birmings, Huntington - the town of the Huntings, Kensington - the town of the Kensings.
The Germanic origin of a geographical name may also be recognized by such elements as ford (from OE ford), shire (from OE scīr - place), bourgh, borourgh, or bury (from OE burh - city, or town), field (from OE fēld) e.g.: Yorkshire, Hampshire, Oxford, Bradford, Edinburgh, Scarborough, Canterbury, Salisbury, Sheffield and so on.
Note: It should be noted, however, that geographical names often bear a mixed or hybrid character. That means they are coined from the elements of different origin, e.g.: Yorkshire < Celtic York + Germanic shire, Lancaster < Celtic Lan + Latin caster.
Conversion of Britain to Christianity
024. Unlike the Celts who had adopted Christianity by the middle of the fourth century the Anglo-Saxons in the time of the conquest were still pagans. They worshipped Woden, Thunor (or Thor), Frei, Tiw and many other pagan gods and the evidence of their belief can still be found in the language.
Thus, the names of pagan gods are preserved in the days of the week.
Tuesday < OE Tiwesdæg (the day of Tiw, Germanic god of war);

Wednesday < OE Wodandæg (the day of Woden, Germanic god of wind);

Thursday < OE Thunorsdæg (the day of Thunor, Germanic god of thunder);

Friday < OE Frīdæg (the day of Frei, Germanic goddess of love);

Saturday < OE Sæternesdæg (the day of Saturn).
The latter word demonstrates the use of the name borrowed from Roman mythology. Saturn (OE – Sætern) the father of Jupiter, the main Roman god.
The other two days of the week preserve the names of the heavenly bodies. That is also evidence of paganism as pagan people worshipped the stars and the planets as their gods.
Sunday < OE Sunnandæg (the day of the Sun);

Monday < OE Mōnandæg (the day of the Moon).
025. Linguistic evidence of Anglo-Saxon paganism is also provided by names of legendary heroes, Anglo-Saxon kings and chieftains, poets of the past.
It was a custom with the pagans to give men names of animals, trees and other objects of nature. Such are the names Hengist and Horsa (both mean «horse»), Ethelstan (precious stone), Cynewulf (leader of wolves), Asc (ash-tree).
Note: Charles Dickens, for example, compares the Anglo-Saxon habit of calling people by names of animals with the customs of contemporary Indians of North America.
Pagan names remained popular with Anglo-Saxons for several centuries after adopting Christianity. Some of them are still popular nowadays. These are such names as Oswald, Alfred, Ethel, Osborne.
026. The spread of Christianity over Britain began from Canterbury (Today this city is the religious capital of Britain). It was initiated by pope Gregory I who wished to enlarge the sphere of his influence. The group of missionaries headed by St. Augustine began their activity in 597, and within a century practically all England received the new religion. The Anglo-Saxons readily adopted Christian religion. On the one hand, they were attracted by the unusual life of the missionaries, on the other hand, the spread of Christianity was supported by Celtic Christian Church which had survived the Anglo-Saxon invasion in Wales and Ireland – see christianity.
