Abstract: A technique for obtaining coatings on a 0.12%C/18%Cr/10%Ni/Ti austenitic stainless steel by its aluminizing in melts of the following composition x%Al + (100% - x)%Li(x = 3, 10) at the temperature range 870-1070 K for 5-100 h has been developed. An investigation in to the decrease in the tritium penetration through the steel has been carried out. It has been shown that two-side aluminizing of the steel in the 10%Al/90%Li melt at 870 and 970 K for 5 h decreases its tritium permeability by more than three orders of magnitude. Furthermore, aluminizing the steel under these regimes reduces its erosion coefficient by one order of magnitude on average due to radiation blistering, decreases its coefficient of physical sputtering by more than 2.5 times and protects the steel from failure under the action of hydrogen pulsed plasma fluxes with the incident flux specific power up to 4-5.10(10) W m(-2) and a pulse duration of 10-50 mu s. The mechanisms of decreasing the tritium permeation with regard to the surface relief forming under the treatment have been discussed. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

Abstract: Amorphous ribbon-type filler metals represent a promising facility for fastening heterogeneous materials together. The advantage results from the homogeneity of element and phase compositions and the strictly specified geometrical dimensions of such fillers. Amorphous fillers Zr-Ti-Fe-Be, Zr-Ti-Ni-Cu and Ti-Zr-Ni-Cu and microcrystalline fillers Al-Si and Cu-Sn-Mn-In-Ni were produced by quenching at a rate of about 10(6) K s(-1). Brazing of graphite with metals (Cu + MPG-6, Cu + RGT, Mo + MIG-1, V + MIG-1, V + RGT) was accomplished using ribbon-type fillers. Two types of metal-based samples were produced in the form of plates and rakes. The rakes were made by brazing three small graphite bars to the metal, the 2 mm space between the bars being 0.25 of the bar height. The results of metallographic studies of the brazing zone and of tests on brazed structures treated by pulsed energy fluxes are discussed.

Abstract: The results of the investigations on new kinds of perspective materials for the high power units of fusion reactors in conditions of action simulating the expected plasma disruptions have been presented. Erosion, changes of the surface topography, the element and phase composition of the intermetallic alloys of a Ti-Al-V system and the type GR reactor graphite impregnated with an 50wt%/Ti/50wt%Cu alloy under the action of hydrogen pulsed plasma fluxes with a maximum ion energy of 2 keV have been studied. The flux specific energy Q was equal to 100 J/cm(2), the pulse duration changed in the 15-20 mu s range and the number of pulses N was from 3 to 30. It has been established that the heat-treated intermetallic alloy containing 15 at.% V has a high erosion stability depending on the number of irradiation pulses and has a minimum erosion coefficient of 0.2-0.3 mu g/(J cm(2)) in comparison with investigated alloys. The impregnated graphites are subjected to less erosion compared to that of the initial reactor graphite at a sufficiently small number of irradiation pulses (N less than or equal to 15). Abstract: An attempt was made to review the current joining techniques being considered for the ITER plasma facing components (PFC). This review describes the general characteristics of two of the joining techniques (brazing and diffusion bonding) being used to join a beryllium armor to a copper alloy heat sink and describes the issues associated with these joining processes. Much of the information is relevant to the other ITER material candidates. Most important is a list of the relevant activities either completed or in progress addressing the beryllium-copper joining issues.

Abstract: Rapidly solidified (RS) amorphous and microcrystalline ribbon-type brazing filler metals (FMs) represent a promising facility for joining heterogeneous materials together. The advantage results are followed from the homogeneity of element and phase compositions and the strictly specified geometrical dimensions of such FMs. Produced by rapid solidification technology amorphous FM: Zr-Ti-Fe-Be (STEMET(1) 1403) and microcrystalline FMs: Al-Si (STEMET 1501), Cu-Sn-Mn-In-Ni (STEMET 1120) and Cu-Sn-In-Ni (STEMET 1108) were used. Brazing of beryllium with metals (Be + Cu; Be + SS; Be + V) was performed using ribbon-type FMs. Metallographic and microprobe analysis of brazed zones suggested that components of FMs are uniformly distributed, pores and cracks are absent. Tensile strength testing of brazed joints was carried out.

Influence of alloying elements in Ni and Fe on ion-implanted helium behavior

Abstract: Behavior of ion-implanted helium and bubble microstructure evolution in Ni-base (NGC, NI-AI) and Fe-base (Fe-C) model alloys, as well as in homogeneous austenitic 16-15 type steel with various carbon contents and in age hardening 15-35 type steel as a function of alloying element concentration, have been investigated by means of thermal desorption spectrometry (TDS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results show the different nature of influence of carbon and aluminium on bubble parameters formed during postirradiation annealings. Calculated by means of the 'tempering' method, helium release effective activation energy proved to be higher for alloys than for pure metals. The effect of these observations is discussed from the standpoint of diffusion parameter change in metals by alloying.

Abstract: The findings of investigation into chemical and physical sputtering of various graphite materials which can be used as protection materials for the first wall of a thermonuclear reactor are presented. Sputtering of hydrogen ions with energy of 9 keV has been carried out in temperature range of 330-870 K. It has been shown that surface boronizing by the method of chemical transport reactions of MPG-8 graphite decreases chemical sputtering in 2.5-3 times. Deposition of the same coat on carbon glass-ceramic of USB-15 type fully suppresses its chemical sputtering in all temperature range. In the process of sputtering an intensive growth of whiskers composed only of carbon atoms has been observed.

Abstract: A diffusion model is suggested for computing the rate of delayed hydride cracking (DHC) in nonirradiated zirconium-base alloys. The rates of DHC in claddings of fuel elements of VVER and RBMK reactors and in pressure pipes of CANDU reactors are predicted.

Abstract: The results of the modification of metal materials treated by high temperature pulsed plasma fluxes (HTPPF) with a specific power of incident flux changing in the (3-100) x 10(9) W m(-2) range and a pulse duration lying from 15 to 50 mu s have been presented. Results of HTPPF action were studied on the stainless steels of 18Cr-10Ni, 16Cr-15Ni, 13Cr-2Mo types; on the structural steels of 13Cr, St. 3, St. 45 types; on the tool steels of U8, 65G types, and others; on nickel and high nickel alloy of 20Cr-45Ni type; on zirconium-base alloys and other metals. The microstructure and properties of modified materials (mechanical, tribological, erosion and other properties) and surface alloying of metals exposed to HTPPF action have been investigated.

It was found that the material modification by HTPPF resulted in a simultaneous increase of several properties of the units treated: microhardness of the surface and layers of 40-60 mu m in depth, tribological characteristics (friction coefficient, wear resistance), mechanical properties (sigma(y), sigma(0.2), sigma(r)) on retention of the initial plasticity, corrosion resistance, radiation erosion under ion irradiation and others. The determining factor of the changes observed is the formation of the fine cellular structure in the near-surface layers at a depth of 20 mu m with dimensions of the cells changing in the range from 0.1 to 1.5 mu m depending on the kind of material, its preliminary treatment and the parameters of plasma fluxes.
