Положительные переживания, связанные с настоящим, можно разделить на две категории: удовольствия и духовное удовлетворение.

Удовольствия включают в себя как телесные, так.. и более воз вышенные переживания. Телесные удовольствия сжмюминутны, они связаны с работой наших органов чувств — восприятием приятных вкусов и запахов, звуков и картин, здоро вых и краси вых движений, сексуального наслаждения. Более всэзвышенные удовольствия тоже кратковременны, но в основам них лежат порой довольно сложные явления. При этом челе-овек может испытывать восхищение, экстаз, трепет, блаженство, радость, веселье, ликование, волнение, энтузиазм, покой и тс. п.

Удовольствия, связанные с настоящим, как и псрочие пози тивные эмоции, составляют фундамент нашего субъективного самоощущения. Оценить психологическое состоянаие человека можно при помощи тестов. Предлагаемые в книге способы изме рения положительных чувств надежны и стабильны. Изучению положительных чувств и способов их усиления гс освящена, в основном, первая часть книги.

Итак, положительные эмоции в настоящем связжсты с телес ными удовольствиями например, ощущением приютного тепла

или оргазма — и возвышенными удовольствиями например,

блаженством, радостью или комфортом.

Приятная жизнь это жизнь, насыщенная положительными чувствами, связанными с настоящим, прошлым и будущим.

Духовное удовлетворение еще одна категория позитивных переживаний в настоящем. Однако, в отличие от удовольствий, оно связано не с чувствами, а с увлекающими нас видами деятельности: альпинизмом, чтением, танцем, интересной беседой, игрой и т. д. Духовное удовлетворение связано с пол ной поглощенностью любимым делом, самозабвением и полным отсутствием всяких эмоций, кроме ретроспективныx: «А ведь было здорово!». Духовное удовлетворение связано сг состоянием «потока», когда время останавливается и человек звабывает обо всем на свете.

Установлено, что получить духовное удовлетворение невоз можно, если не использовать и не развивать свои иэндивидуаль-ные достоинства и добродетели. Счастье— цель позитивной

психологии — состоит не только в том, чтобы множить при ятные сиюминутные субъективные ощущения. Для истинного счастья необходима подлинная жизнь. Последняя подразуме вает, что положительные чувства и духовное удовлетворение должны быть достигнуты реализацией наших индивидуальных достоинств. Достоинствам и добродетелям посвящена вторая часть книги. Духовное удовлетворение — основа достойной жизни.



Достойная жизнь подразумевает реализацию индивидуальных достоинств для достижения духовного удовлетворения во всех сферах жизни.

Основной итог многочисленных споров заключается в том, что к счастью ведут разные дороги. Мы стремимся реализовать свои индивидуальные достоинства и добродетели в работе, в любви, в воспитании детей и поисках смысла жизни. Этому искусству и посвящена третья часть книги.

Цель моего труда — научить читателей наилучшим образом распоряжаться настоящим, прошлым и будущим, правильно определить свои индивидуальные достоинства и затем приме нить их на практике. Как это ни парадоксально, «счастливому» человеку нет необходимости испытывать большую часть тех положительных чувств, о которых говорилось выше.

Если же вы хотите, чтобы ваша жизнь была исполнена глу бокого смысла, используйте свои индивидуальные достоинства для служения высшей цели. Таким образом, эта книга служит своеобразным введением в осмысленную жизнь.



Жизнь, исполненная смысла, связана с использованием наших индивидуальных достоинств и добродетелей для служения выс шим целям.

Таким образом, мы вправе утверждать, что истинно счаст ливая и осмысленная жизнь включает в себя положительные чувства, связанные с прошлым и будущим, приятные пережива ния в настоящем, духовное удовлетворение от реализации своих индивидуальных достоинств, а также использование последних в интересах служения великой и значительной цели.

Идея позитивной психологии зародилась в беседе трех энту зиастов во время отдыха на Юкатане в начале января 1998 года и постепенно воплотилась в научное движение. Эта книга была закончена через четыре года после рождения позитивной психологии и, по сути дела, представляет собой ее манифест.

— Майк, — начал я, — конечно, вы с Изабеллой уже решили, куда ехать на Новый год. Но, может, вы все-таки откажетесь от этих планов и поедете с нами на Юкатан? Мы сняли домик на Акумале, там найдется место и для вас. Я хотел бы поговорить с тобой о создании нового научного направле ния — «позитивной психологии»...

Затем я позвонил Рею Фаулеру:

— Рей, я знаю, что вы с Санди уже решили, куда ехать на
Новый год...

В первые дни января 1998-го на Акумале мы просыпались рано утром, «кофейничали» до полудня, потом заносили в ноут-

буки результаты этих обсуждений, а после обеда шли купаться и гулять вместе с детьми. К концу недели вырисовалась основа: содержание, методы, инфраструктура.

Новое направление включало в себя три области. Первая — изучение положительных чувств. Эд Динер согласился взять эту сферу на себя. Вторая — изучение позитивного характера, достоинств и добродетелей, вызывающих положительные чув ства. Майк Чиксентмихали изъявил готовность возглавить эту часть исследований.

Далее мы решили, что позитивные характеры нуждаются в классификации — подобно тому, как в былые времена, до появления диагностического справочника, нуждались в клас сификации расстройства психики. Справочник позитивных характеров поможет специалистам ориентироваться в досто инствах личности. Эта классификация не обязательно должна оставаться неизменной: грядущие поколения ученых наверняка ее дополнят.

Когда мы уразумели, что этот вопрос не обойти, пришлось разработать критерии оценки различных свойств характера. Руководить научными изысканиями в этой области взялись Крис Петерсон и Джордж Вайан. Психиатрия, как известно, — наука о болезнях и отклонениях, позитивной же психологии под руководством Петерсона и Вайана надлежало позаботиться о здоровье и благополучии нормальных людей.

И наконец, третья, крайне важная область, оставшаяся, увы, за рамками этой книги, — изучение позитивных явлений и инсти тутов. Какие общественные установления в действительности способствуют развитию позитивного характера и стимулируют положительные чувства? Крепкая семья, здоровое окружение, демократия, гражданские свободы, экономическая стабиль ность — все это примеры позитивных институтов. Их изучением должны бы заниматься социология, политология, антропология и экономика, но эти дисциплины (подобно академической психо логии) в настоящее время заняты в основном явлениями отрица тельными —расизмом, дискриминацией полов, макиавеллизмом,

монополизмом и т. п. Эти общественные науки выполняют гряз ную работу — ищут средства для борьбы с явлениями, затруд няющими нашу жизнь, — ну а пока, в лучшем случае, учат, как избежать подобных явлений или свести их действие к минимуму. Майк, Рей и я пришли к выводу, что людям необходима пози тивная наука, изучающая явления положительные. Кэтлин Хол Джэмисон согласилась возглавить исследования в этой области. Покойный ныне Роберт Нозик обещал помочь нам в разработке философского обоснования концепции.

В итоге мы решили создать Общество позитивной психоло гии, объединяющее известных ученых. Эту работу возглавил я, а Питер Шульман стал координатором проекта.

Майк, Рей и я использовали традиционные научные методы. Те, кто думает, что позитивная психология совершила револю цию в науке, будут разочарованы. Однако я считаю, что нужно называть вещи своими именами, не преувеличивая их значе ния. Мы рассматриваем позитивную психологию как особое направление традиционной науки, изучающее не болезни и расстройства, а положительные явления. Позитивная психоло гия не заменяет традиционную, а дополняет ее.

Наконец, нам, умудренным практическим опытом, следо вало подумать и об инфраструктуре нового направления. Мы знали, что интересного содержания и проверенных научных методов совершенно недостаточно. Необходимы рабочие места, фанты, конкурсы, горящие энтузиазмом исследователи. И мы решили активно работать над этой проблемой. Особенно мы нуждались в молодых научных силах, но нужно было привлечь и уже состоявшихся ученых, создать вакансии для помощников преподавателей, аспирантов и студентов.

Все это требовало значительных средств, и их поиск стал моей обязанностью. Большую часть 1998 года я провел в разъездах, читая доклады во всевозможных фондах с расчетом получить от них финансовую поддержку. Я опытный оратор, на моем счету

сотни выступлений и докладов о приобретенном оптимизме и приобретенной беспомощности. Тем не менее даже я оказался готовым к той бурной реакции, которую вызвали мои рассуж дения. Впервые в жизни слушатели аплодировали мне стоя, впервые в жизни я видел слезы на их глазах.

— Позитивная психология у меня в крови, а я вместо этого потратила годы на изучение всякой ерунды вроде психических заболеваний, — сказала мне женщина-психолог с дрожью в голосе.

Другой известный психотерапевт признался:

— История Никки — очень хороший пример. Я тоже лечу пациентов, помогая им выработать защитные положительные качества. Я пришел к этому интуитивно.

У меня — большой опыт добывания исследовательских гран тов. В свое время мне часто поручали договариваться с разными организациями и фондами о финансировании какого-нибудь про екта. С моей точки зрения, это довольно унизительная и тяжелая работа. Но теперь, когда трудился во имя позитивной психологии, я не чувствовал ни усталости, ни досады — я был просто окры лен. Харви Дейл, Джим Спенсер и Джоэль Фляйшман из Atlantic Philanthropies охотно согласились оплачивать наши исследования, проявив удивительную щедрость.
