Agriculture contributes with 18% in Macedonian GDP and absorbs one fifth of labor force
in the country. From the other side Macedonia hosts mineral deposits containing copper, iron, lead,
lignite, zinc, and other minerals. Mines and mining industry also seriously participated in state GDP
with 7%. Exploitation of those deposits affects the agricultural production causing a contamination
of food produced around the mines and processing industry. Lot of studies showed a high level of
heavy metal presence in the soil and food samples. Currently, there are new initiatives for opening
of new mines in Macedonia which provoke controversies and cause resistance among food producer
and wider publicity. The aims of this article are: to make brief review of state of art in terms of con-
tamination of agricultural areas from mining industries in the Republic of Macedonia; to present the
current initiatives for new mines and reactions in the country and to promote a way of remediation
of contaminated area using genetic engineering. The review of the influence of mine industry on
agriculture cover: the lead smelter in Veles, copper mine and smelter in Bucim, ferronickel smelter
in Kavadarci and abandoned mine Alchar. Results from soils and food samples of vegetables (let-
tuce, carrot), fruits (strawberry, cherries) and wine around the lead smelter in Veles showed in-
creased values for concentration of heavy metals Pb and Cd and some of them were extreme. It is
the reason for reaction against the opening of new mines Ilovica and Kazandol. The article initiates
application of GMO‘s in remediation of contaminated agricultural area.
