Translation of phraseological units into English is very difficult task. " By virtue of the semantic
wealth, figurativeness, laconicism and brightness the phraseology plays in language very important
role" . It gives speeches expressiveness and originality. Especially phraseological units are widely
used in oral speech, in art and political literature.
Phraseological equivalents can be full and partial.
Full phraseological equivalents are those ready English equivalents which coincide with Russians
on value, lexical structure, figurativeness, stylistic coloring and grammatical structure: for ex:
почить
на лаврах – rest on one's laurels, соль земли – the salt of the earth, играть с огнем – to play with
fire,
нет дыма без огня – there is no smoke without fire, трудолюбивый как пчела – busy as a bee.
Translation on the basis of partial phraseological equivalents at all doesn't mean that thus value
and figurativeness of the phraseological unit are transferred not completely; under this term it must
kept in mind that in an equivalent offered in English some divergences with Russian are possible. In
other words, for the translator " when translating phraseological unit, instead of its language
structure". Partial phraseological equivalents can be broken into three.
The phraseological units coinciding on value, stylistic coloring and relatives on figurativeness,
but dispersing on lexical structure belong to the first group:
в гостях хорошо, а дома лучше – East
or West, home is the best,
овчинка выделки не стоит – the game is not worth the candle.
Phraseological units coinciding on value, figurativeness, lexical structure and stylistic coloring
belong to the second group; but differ on such formal signs, as number and a word order, for ex:
не
все то золото, что блестит – all is not gold that glitters; за деревьями не видеть леса – not to see
the wood for the trees.
Phraseological units which coincide on all signs, except for figurativeness belong to the third
group. In Russian we speak –
отправиться на боковую whereas an English equivalent will be usual
– to go bed. In Russian we speak –
старо, как мир in English the same thought is transferred by a
turn – as old as the hills.
Phraseological units are widely used in literature of all styles. And the competent translator
shouldn't allow inaccuracies in the translation of this or that phraseological unit. Without knowledge
of phraseology it is impossible to estimate brightness and expressiveness of speech, to understand a
joke, a word-play, and sometimes simple sense of all statement.
