The mayor is expected to make a speech at the conference. 12. The Romans are said to have built good roads in England. 13. He is likely to have finished working at this book. 14. He seems to like the performance. 15. He was considered to be one of the most experienced football players in the team. 16. He was seen to be running toward the forest. 17. This opera company is said to have given some performances in London. 18. He heard the clock strike 12. 19. The plane is reported to have landed in time. 20. They watched him go upstairs and enter the house.


UNIT 5. Perfect infinitive with modal verbs


1. Translate the following sentences into Russian.
1) You shouldn’t have bought any milk. There’s a lot in the fridge. 2) You should have locked the car before leaving. It could have been stolen. We are lucky that nothing bad happened to it. 3) She looks very sad, she may have lost her job. 4) Don’t drive so fast! You could have killed that boy! Luckily he survived. 5) Has Nancy phoned? No? But she should have phoned an hour ago, we agreed. 6) She can’t have broken this vase! She knows it is my favourite vase…was my favourite vase. 7) He must have mentioned it at the lecture but I don’t remember. 8) She can’t have missed the lecture. She must have been ill.


2. Complete the sentences with a past modal and the verb in brackets.
