VI. Andrew Wiles
The only currently living mathematician on the list, Andrew Wiles is most well-known for his proof of Fermat’s Last Theorem: that no positive integers, a, b and c can satisfy the equation a^n+b^n=c^n for n greater than 2. (If n=2 it is the Pythagoras Formula). Although the contributions to math are not, perhaps, as grand as other on this list, he did ‘invent’ large portions of new mathematics for his proof of the theorem. Besides, his dedication is often admired by most, as he quite literally shut himself away for 7 years to formulate a solution. When it was found that the solution contained an error, he returned to solitude for a further year before the solution was accepted. To put in perspective how ground breaking and new the math was, it had been said that you could count the number of mathematicians in the world on one hand who, at the time, could understand and validate his proof. Nonetheless, the effects of such are likely to only increase as time passes (and more and more people can understand it).

Answer the following questions:
1) What is Andrew Wiles credited with?
2) Why is his achievement in mathematics often admired by most?

VII. Bashkortostan
Bashkortostan lies in the south of Urals where Europe meets Asia. About 4 million people live in the republic: Bashkirs, Russians, Tatars, Ukrainians and other nationalities. The total of 50 nationalities lives in Bashkortostan.
Within a short period of its history the Bashkir republic has developed a mighty economy and advanced science and culture.
The national wealth is great: minerals, forests, rivers and lakes, fertile soils. Bashkortostan is rich in oil, natural gas, coal, iron, copper, nickel, gold and other minerals. New towns such as Salavat, Ishimbay, Oktyabrsky, Kumertay, Agidel came into being where the deposits are exploited.
A lot of hydroelectric power stations were built on the rivers, the Pavlovskaja and the Nugushskaja hydropower stations are among them.
Bashkortostan is the country’s biggest oil refining and extracting center. The petrochemical, engineering, instrument making industries as well as metallurgy, light and food industries made rapid progress in last years. The goods produced in the republic are sent not only to the heighbouring economic regions of the CIS (community of independent states) but also abroad – to China, Mongolia, Germany...
Bashkortostan’s agriculture produces much grain, potatoes, meat and milk. Before the revolution the Bashkir people were almost 100 % illiterate. Only after the revolution the Bashkirs acquired a written language of their own like 40 other nationalities of the CIS. There are 11 higher schools in Bashkortostan.
