LINGUISTIC SITUATION: CONCEPT DEFINITION, WAYS OF STUDYING

The article analyzes the experience of studying such socio-linguistic phenomenon as linguistic situation. Systematizing the avail-
able knowledge on this problem the paper arranges a line of related concepts: 
linguistic situation, linguistic status, national 
linguistic situation. Th
e author identifies and illustrates the possible ways to describe linguistic situation. The research findings 
should become the starting point while developing and realizing linguistic policy. At the same time the factual material (sampling 
and analysis of scientific articles, theses) indicates the shortage of systematic knowledge on socio-linguistics.
