Жак Валлен – один из ведущих демографов мира и (согласно международным опросам демографов) самый известный из ныне живущих французских демографов. Его работы внесли значительный вклад во многие разделы демографии и, прежде всего, в исследования в области смертности и продолжительности жизни. Ж.Валлен известен своим методом реконструкции непрерывных временных рядов смертности по причинам смерти, который позволяет преодолевать разрывы, связанные с ревизиями международной классификации болезней и причин смерти. Результаты эмпирических исследований Валлена, многие из которых были выполнены в соавторстве с Франс Милле, всегда основаны на исчерпывающем сборе данных и их всестороннем анализе. Они обычно воспринимаются в качестве «истин в последней инстанции» или некоего «золотого стандарта», не нуждающегося в дальнейших проверках. Ж.Вален – один из авторов фундаментальной монографии «Демография. Анализ и синтез», которая представляет собой наиболее полную энциклопедию современных демографических методов. Ж.Валлен выполнил большое число исследований в области изучению смертности и продолжительности жизни в странах бывшего СССР и Восточной Европы.
К сфере научных интересов Ж.Валлена относятся также мировые демографические изменения и демографическое будущее человечества, теория эпидемиологического перехода, феномен долгожительства, социально-экономическое неравенство в области здоровья и смертности, население и развитие, и демографические процессы странах Магриба и других регионах Африки и Азии.
В 1998 г. Жак Вален был выбран вице-президентом Международного союза по изучению народонаселения (IUSSP), крупнейшего международного демографического союза, а с 2002 по 2005 гг. был Президентом этого Союза, т.е. занимал самый высокий пост в мировой демографической науке.

Более двухсот статей Жака Валлена были опубликованы в международных научных журналах. Ряд из них получили широкий отклик. К их числу относится работа, озаглавленная «The End of the Demographic Transition: Relief or Concern?» (Population and Development Review, Vol. 28, Issue 1, p. 105–120, 2002).

Выступление Жака Валена на Публичном семинаре будет в целом основано на этой статье с учетом новых данных и новых исследований, появившихся в последние годы.

Jacques Vallin is one of the world’s leading demographers and, according to international survey of demographers, the most known living French demographer. He significantly contributed to many research areas of demography and, above all, in study of mortality and life expectancy. J.Vallin is know for his method for reconstruction of continuous time series of mortality by causes of death, which allow to bridge the gaps, associated with the periodic revisions of The International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Causes of Death (ICD). Empirical studies, many of which were carried out in collaboration with France Meslé, are always based on rigorous data collection and thoughtful analyses. Research results by Jacques Vallin are being considered by many as a kind of “mathematical truth” that will remain true forever. Jacques Vallin is editor and author of the important monograph “Demography. Analysis and Synthesis”, the most detailed high-quality encyclopedia of the modern demographic methods. Among other things, J.Vallin has produced a number of crucial studies on mortality in countries of the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe.
The range of J.Vallin’s research interests includes also: global demographic changes and demographic future of the world, the theory of epidemiological transition, phenomenon of extreme longevity, socio-economic inequalities in health, population and development, demographics of Maghreb and other developing regions in Africa and Asia.
In 1998 Jacques Vallin was elected as Vice-President of the International Union for the Study of Population (IUSPP) and from 2002 to 2005 he served as the President of this Union, i.e. held the most honorable position in the world demographic science.
