Case reports of sarcoma patients with optimized lectin-oriented mistletoe extract therapy.

Abstract

BACKGROUND:

Mistletoe (Viscum album L) extracts (ME) are widespread as immunomodulatory therapeutic agents in alternative tumor treatment. Assessing the often-controversial clinical results is rather difficult since the effects of ME on the immune system cannot be equally reproduced. Mistletoe lectins (ML) are the only mistletoe ingredients also found in vivo that are capable of having a positive effect on the immune balance of patients with tumors. Other components have only been tested in vitro, and the removal of mistletoe lectins ML from the extract can put an end to the immunological efficacy of ME. Preclinical investigations in the tumor models (using nude mice xenotransplanted with human leiomyosarcoma and interleukin-12-deficient C57BL6 mice) show that without immunological reactions, ME induce less antitumor efficacy. ML, functioning as ligands for pattern recognition receptors of the natural immune system, are docked to ganglioside molecules (CD75) of monocytes and granulocytes, thereby stimulating the natural antitumor mechanisms.

OBJECTIVES:

The aim of this article is to present and discuss several favorable clinical responses of patients who had sarcoma and who were treated with immunologically effective ME preparations. COURSE OF THERAPY AND RESULTS: In accordance with the bell-shaped dose-response relationship of ML, the patients with sarcoma were treated with ME preparations, standardized for the active sugar-binding lectin contents. Thus, an optimal dose of 0.75-1.0 ng/kg ML was given twice a week subcutaneously. In this report, the clinical progress of 6 patients with sarcoma showed remissions of tumor symptoms.

CONCLUSIONS:

It seems that this disease is beneficially influenced by optimized lectin-oriented ME therapy since patients with sarcoma may react especially well to the improved balance of natural immunological mechanisms. These case reports require further clinical studies with patients with sarcoma.

Омела (Viscum album L) экстракты (меня) широко распространены в качестве иммуномодулирующих терапевтических средств в альтернативные лечения опухолевых заболеваний. Оценки зачастую противоречивых клинических результатов очень сложно, поскольку воздействие на меня иммунная система не может быть одинаково воспроизводятся. Омела лектины (мл) омела ингредиенты также найти in vivo, которые способны оказать положительное влияние на иммунный баланс больных с опухолями. Другие компоненты были проверены только в пробирке, и удаление омела лектины мл экстракт может положить конец иммунологическая эффективность меня. Доклинические исследования в опухоли моделей (с использованием ню мышей xenotransplanted с человека лейомиосаркома и интерлейкина-12-дефицитных C57BL6 мышей) показывают, что без иммунологических реакций, меня вызывают меньше противоопухолевой эффективности. Цели:

Целью данной статьи является представление и обсуждение ряда благоприятные клинические ответы пациентов, которым была саркома и которые были обработаны с иммунологически эффективного меня препаратов. Курс терапии и результаты: в соответствии с колоколообразной доза-ответ " между мл, у больных с саркомой обращались со мной подготовки, стандартизированные для активного сахара-привязка лектин содержание. Таким образом, оптимальной дозе 0,75-1,0 НГ/кг мл было дано два раза в неделю, подкожно. В этом докладе прогресс клинической 6 пациентов с саркомой показал ремиссии опухоли симптомы.

Выводы:

Кажется, что это заболевание оказало благотворное влияние путем оптимизации лектин-ориентированных меня терапии, поскольку у пациентов с саркомой может реагировать особенно хорошо, улучшается баланс природных иммунологических механизмов. Эти доклады дела требуют дальнейших клинических исследованиях у пациентов с саркомой

Quality of Life and Related Dimensions in Cancer Patients Treated with Mistletoe Extract (Iscador): A Meta-Analysis

Abstract

Objectives. The aim of this meta-analysis was to determine the effectiveness of the fermented plant extract Iscador, produced from the white-berry European mistletoe, in the treatment of patients with cancer with respect to quality-of-life- (QoL-) associated measures. Methods. We searched databases such as PubMed/Medline, Excerpta Medica Database (EMBASE), CAMbase, and other for controlled clinical studies on parameters associated with QoL. Outcome data were extracted and converted into standardized mean differences and their standard errors. Results. Thirteen prospective and controlled studies which met the inclusion/exclusion criteria reported positive effects in favor of the Iscador application. A random-effect meta-analysis estimated the overall treatment effect at standardized mean difference = 0.56 (CI: 0.41 to 0.71, P < .0001). However, the methodological quality of the studies was poor. Conclusions. The analyzed studies give some evidence that Iscador treatment might have beneficial short-time effects on QoL-associated dimensions and psychosomatic self-regulation.
