The latest stage of HIV infection is acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). HIV affects white blood cells, which leads to a weakening of the immune system. This increases the likelihood of developing diseases such as tuberculosis, infectious diseases and some types of cancer. HIV is transmitted through various bodily fluids of infected people, including blood, breast milk, seminal fluid and vaginal secretions. Transmission of infection does not occur through kissing, hugging or sharing food. HIV can also be transmitted from mother to child. HIV infection is treatable and preventable with the help of antiretroviral therapy (ART). In the absence of treatment, HIV infection can turn into AIDS, often many years after infection. Currently, WHO defines severe immunodeficiency as a disorder in which the number of CD4 cells falls below the level of 200 cells/mm3, or as the third or fourth clinical stage of HIV infection in adults and adolescents according to the WHO classification.
