SYSTEM OPERATION
As it is known, true heading of the aircraft is equal to

ИК = А - КУ , (1)

where А is azimuth of the luminary; КУ is relative bearing of the luminary.

The azimuth of the luminary can be determined by solving astronomical triangle. For this purpose there is special device - сферант (calculator) in the astrocompass. The calculator is used to reproduce astronomical triangle mechanically.

Fig.1

ab – cramp of latitudes; lmarc of altitudes;

WOE – axis of latitudes; OzZ – azimuth axis;

hOP – time axis; On – pin of declination.

d; k – bearing;

Fig.1.1
The main parts of the calculator are (Fig.1):

  • The time axis hOP, rotating in bearings g;

  • cramp of latitudes ab, which is rotating around axis of latitudes WOE in bearings с and d at the post еf ;

  • arc of altitudes lm, which is rotating around the azimuth axis ZzO in bearings k;

  • pin of declination On , one end of which can slide along the arc of altitudes lm, and another one is connected with time axis hOP.

To built astronomic triangle it is necessary to enter in calculator manually the following values: declination of luminary (), Greenwich hour angle (), longitude () and latitude () of the aircraft position. When entering Greenwich hour angle () and longitude () of the aircraft position the time axis of the calculator turns through angle, which is equal to local hour angle t

Thus the calculator’s time axis conditionally set the direction of world axis hOP. The pin of declination and arc of altitudes are turning together with time axis.

While entering latitude () in calculator the cramp of latitudes and the arc of altitudes are rotating together around the axis ZzO. Direction of the axis ZzO conditionally set the direction of vertical (to zenith) in the chosen point ( and ) of the Earth surface.

When entering the declination of luminary in calculator the pin of declination, turning in the point O through angle , slides along the arc of altitudes and turns it to the end. So, the direction of declination pin of calculator sort of sets direction on the luminary.

Thus, by means of calculator the astronomic triangle ZPS can be built.

As it is known, vertex angle Z of this triangle is equal to azimuth of the luminary А, the value of which can be determined by angle of axis ZzO turn.

The relative bearing (КУ) of the luminary is determined in the astrocompass with the help of photovoltaic follow-up system (Fig.2).

As sensing element of the system the direction-finding head is used. It consists of two photoelectric cells, which are placed with their light-sensitive layers in opposite directions.

At lighting up the photoelectric cells the photo-e.m.f. appears in them. The value of this photo-e.m.f. depends on the photoelectric cells illumination. Because of fact, that the photoelectric cells are engaged back-to-back, the value and polarity of resulting e.m.f. will depend on difference between illumination of the photoelectric cells. When surfaces of the photoelectric cells set in the vertical surface, the resulting e.m.f. is equal to 0.

The resulting e.m.f., appearing in the direction-finding head, goes to the input of amplifier У1. In this amplifier the e.m.f. is transformed into alternating voltage with freqwency 400 Hz. Then transformed voltage is amplified and goes from the amplifier У1 to control winding of operating motor (Мк.у.). The motor turns by the reduction gear the direction-finding head till it set in the vertical surface of the luminary. At the same time rotor of relative bearing transmitting selsyn (СДк.у.) turns (while the direction-finding head is rotating).

Rolls of the direction-finding head relative to the azimuth surface at constant КУ of the luminary cause additional photo-e.m.f. because of illumination irregularity of the photoelectric cells, and therefore create an error of the luminary relative bearing determination. For elimination of this error it is necessary to enter the relative bearing correction (КУ) on rolls of direction-finding head. Quantity of this correction depends on the head roll i, altitude h of the luminary and is determined by equation

.

As roll corrections are not large, than

.

Determination of КУ in radians is implemented by potentiometric resolver with potentiometers on pendulum roll-corrector in ДКУ and in the altitude arc of calculator. The pendulum with swing axis set in direction finding surface is used as sensitive element, taking rolls of photoelectric head. The potentiometer brush sin i is connected with the pendulum axis.

The resolver while calculating the correction, transforms it to the angle of turn. Appropriate electromotor turns one semi-axis of mechanical differential gear МД trough the angle, which is equal to roll correction (КУ).

The mechanical differential gear is used for algebraic summation of true heading (), not corrected with roll correction, and roll correction КУ.

Because the main axis of the differential gear turns through the angle, equal to algebraic sum of turning angles of its semi-axes, then it is possible with the help of differential gear to solve the following equation

,

where .

Turn of one of the differential gear semi-axes trough the angle КУ is implemented by the motor МКУ, and another semi-axis is turned by the motor МИК'.

Control of the motor МИК' is made by rotor winding voltage of the receiving selsyn СПик' , amplified by means of amplifier У2. The stator winding of this selsyn СПик' are connected with stator windings of differential selsyn ДС, which have three-phase stator and rotor windings.

The differential selsyn is placed on the cramp of latitudes of the calculator, and rotor of the selsyn is connected with its azimuth axis by gear transmission.

Three-phase voltage, depending on relative bearing of the luminary, goes to rotor winding of the differential selsyn from the stator winding of transmitting selsyn (СДк.у.). The rotor of differential selsyn rotates by azimuth axis of the calculator trough angle, equal to azimuth (A) of the luminary. Therefore in the stator winding of differential selsyn the voltage is excited, which is proportional to difference between angles . This voltage is transformed into turning angle of one semi-axis of the mechanical differential gear by means of selsyn transmission (ДС - СПИК,).

As a result of summation of angles КУ and ИК' the main axis of the mechanical differential gear turns trough angle, equal to the aircraft true heading. The potentiometer’s brushes and rotor of true heading transmitting selsyn are rotating together with the main axis of the differential, and give the value of true heading to consumers with direct and alternating current.

For the purpose of continuous true heading determination (while flying along the great circle) without entering current values of and , there is system of ground correction in the astrocompass. The principal of ground correction operation is to maintain the direction-finding head of the heading angle sensor (ДКУ) in constant position, appropriate to the starting point of the great circle. To keep starting position of the direction-finding head it should turn to the aircraft tail trough angle, which is proportional to the travel by the great circle.

Base of direction-finding head is turned by the travel motor Мs, which is placed in ДКУ. The motor is controlled with amplified voltage of potentiometric bridge disbalance. This bridge consists of travel potentiometer (Пs) in ДКУ and ground correction potentiometer ( Пп.к.).

The potentiometer Пп.к. slider of the ground corrector is moving by electromagnet ЭПК trough angle, proportional to the travel during constant time intervals

,

where - travel;

- ground speed;

- time.
Control of the electromagnet ЭПК is performed by impulses (impulse per minute) from time mechanism, and stroke of its ratchet latch is set manually by lower rack gear of the ground corrector of ground speed. While the slider of potentiometer Пп.к. is moving together with arrow "Сброс пути" the misbalancing voltage appears in the bridge Пп.к.- Пs diagonal. This voltage is amplified and then goes to the control winding of the operation motor (Ms). Motor Ms moves the direction-finding head together with slider of the potentiometer Пs till the misbalancing voltage disappear. Thus the ground correction is implemented.

The astrocompass also allows determination flight true heading ИК at night (without the Sun) with the help of periscopic sextant of panoramic type. In this case it is necessary to put switch В2 "ДКУ-СП" (on the calculator panel) in "СП" position.

To control the normal operation mode of the astrocompass it is possible to use three light signalization systems:

1. Signalization of limiting position of the declination pin in calculator (lamp "Предел");

2. Signalization of normal operation of the time mechanism and entering of the hour angle current value hour angle (lamp "Контроль");

3. Signalization of temperature drop in the calculator and its breaking during the warming up time (lamp "Прогрев").

ORDER OF THE WORK EXECUTION

  1. Setting-up procedures:

  • turn on the astrocompass by tumbler switch “Питание” on the front panel of the calculator and push the button “Подзавод.” 3-4 times;

  • turn on source of light by tumbler switch “Вкл.– выкл.” on the bench;

  • check operability of the rotary table while turning the course angle sensor in one and opposite direction up to an angle 180°. Rotation of the sensor should be made without any significant jamming;

  • check operability of the astrocompass. For this purpose you are to:

    1. count the course indicator readings and push button “Подзавод.”. At this time CI readings should change smoothly;

    2. release the button “Подзавод.” – the course indicator is expected to show the previous reading and arrow shouldn’t oscillate.

  1. The work execution.

2.1. To determine error of luminary azimuth measurement it is necessary to perform the next operations:

- Set zero values of track and speed on the ground corrector;

- Enter the set values of an airplane and luminary coordinates into the calculator;

- Using adjusting screw of the rotary table turn the course angle sensor so that the luminary course angle was equal to zero (this angle corresponds with angle on scale of the rotary table);

- note the course indicator reading and with the help of “Подзавод” button decline the direction-finding head from stable position. Release the button and note new readings of the course indicator – they should differ from previous ones no more then on 1°.

Repeat this operation 3-4 times and write down an average value of the course indication readings. Azimuth of the luminary is equal to reading, shown on the CI.

2.2. Calculate the luminary azimuth by an airplane and luminary coordinates, given by the teacher. Coordinates may be chosen in the table 1.

ПОРЯДОК ВЫПОЛНЕНИЯ РАБОТЫ

1. Подготовка к работе:

– включить астрокомпас тумблером “Питание” на передней панели вычислителя, нажать 3–4 раза кнопку “Подзавод.”;

– включить источник света тумблером “Вкл. – выкл” на стенде;

– проверить работоспособность поворотного стола, поворачивая датчик курсовых углов в одну и другую сторону на угол до 180°. Вращение должно быть без заметных заданий;

– проверить работоспособность компаса. Для этого:

  • отсчитать показание указателя курса и нажать кнопку “Подзавод”, в это время должны плавно изменяться показания указателя курса;

– установить основание датчика курсовых углов в горизонтальное положение;
