invidious [In`vIdIqs] grasping [`grRspIN] malignant [mq`lIgnqnt] seized [sJzd]
I felt rather hurt about this at first; it seemed somehow to be a sort of slight. Why hadn't I got housemaid's knee? Why this invidious reservation? After a while, however, less grasping feelings prevailed. I reflected that I had every other known malady in the pharmacology, and I grew less selfish, and determined to do without housemaid's knee. Gout, in its most malignant stage, it would appear, had seized me without my being aware of it; and zymosis I had evidently been suffering with from boyhood. There were no more diseases after zymosis, so I concluded there was nothing else the matter with me.

I sat and pondered. I thought what an interesting case I must be from a medical point of view, what an acquisition I should be to a class! Students would have no need to "walk the hospitals," if they had me. I was a hospital in myself. All they need do would be to walk round me, and, after that, take their diploma.

Then I wondered how long I had to live (потом я захотел узнать, сколько: «как долго» мне еще жить). I tried to examine myself (я попытался обследовать себя; to examine — осматривать, исследовать, изучать). I felt my pulse (пощупал свой пульс; to feel). I could not at first feel any pulse at all (я не смог сначала прощупать/найти пульс вообще). Then, all of a sudden, it seemed to start off (потом, внезапно, он /пульс/, казалось, начал биться; to start — начинать/ся/; запускать /о машине, механизме/). I pulled out my watch and timed it (я вытащил часы и засек время; to pull out — вытаскивать, выхватывать; to time — рассчитывать, назначать время; измерять продолжительность чего-либо). I made it a hundred and forty-seven to the minute (я насчитал сто сорок семь /ударов/ в минуту; to make — делать, изготовлять; получать, определять). I tried to feel my heart (я попытался нащупать свое сердце). I could not feel my heart (я не мог найти свое сердце). It had stopped beating (оно перестало биться; to stop — останавливать/ся/, прекращать/ся/). I have since been induced to come to the opinion (я позднее пришел к мнению; since — с тех пор; впоследствии, потом; to induce — заставлять, склонять; убеждать, выводить умозаключение; приводить /к чему-либо/) that it must have been there all the time (что оно, должно быть, оставалось там /в груди/ все время), and must have been beating, but I cannot account for it (и, должно быть, билось, но я не могу объяснить этого /почему я не нашел его/). I patted myself all over my front (я похлопал себя всюду спереди; all over — повсюду, на всем протяжении), from what I call my waist up to my head (/начиная/ с того, что я называю своей талией, вплоть до головы), and I went a bit round each side (и я прошелся = похлопал немного по каждому боку; to go-went-gone; round — вокруг, кругом; неподалеку), and a little way up the back (и немного вверх по спине). But I could not feel or hear anything (но не смог ничего почувствовать или услышать). I tried to look at my tongue (я попробовал посмотреть на свой язык). I stuck it out as far as ever it would go, and I shut one eye (я высунул его так далеко, как он мог высунуться = как можно дальше, и закрыл один глаз; to stick out), and tried to examine it with the other (попытался осмотреть его другим). I could only see the tip (я смог увидеть лишь кончик), and the only thing that I could gain from that was to feel more certain than before that I had scarlet fever (и единственное: «единственной вещью», чего я сумел добиться /из этого/, была еще большая, чем раньше, уверенность, что у меня скарлатина; to gain — добывать; получать, приобретать; to feel certain — быть уверенным).

heart [hRt] tongue [tAN] certain [sq:tn]

I pulled out my watch and timed it. I made it a hundred and forty-seven to the minute. I tried to feel my heart. I could not feel my heart. It had stopped beating. I tried to look at my tongue. I stuck it out as far as ever it would go, and I shut one eye, and tried to examine it with the other. I could only see the tip, and the only thing that I could gain from that was to feel more certain than before that I had scarlet fever.
I had walked into that reading-room a happy, healthy man (я вошел в тот читальный зал счастливым, здоровым человеком). I crawled out a decrepit wreck (/а/ выполз немощной развалиной; decrepit — дряхлый, ветхий, престарелый; wreck — крушение, гибель; остатки кораблекрушения; развалины).

I went to my medical man (я пошел к своему врачу; medical man — врач-терапевт, медик). He is an old chum of mine, and feels my pulse (он мой старый приятель, и он щупает мой пульс; chum — близкий друг, приятель), and looks at my tongue, and talks about the weather (смотрит /на/ мой язык, говорит о погоде), all for nothing (и все это бесплатно), when I fancy I'm ill (когда мне кажется, что я болен; to fancy — воображать, представлять себе; полагать); so I thought I would do him a good turn by going to him now (поэтому я подумал, /что/ окажу ему добрую услугу, если отправлюсь к нему сейчас; to do a good turn — оказать хорошую услугу). "What a doctor wants (что нужно врачу; to want — желать, хотеть; нуждаться)," I said (сказал я /себе/; to say), "is practice (/так это/ практика). He shall have me (у него буду я). He will get more practice out of me than out of seventeen hundred of your ordinary, commonplace patients (он получит больше практики от меня, чем от семнадцати сотен ваших обычных, банальных больных), with only one or two diseases each (с одной-двумя болезнями каждый)." So I went straight up and saw him, and he said (итак, я пошел прямо /к нему/ и повидал/навестил его, и он сказал; to go up — подниматься, идти вверх; to see):

"Well, what's the matter with you (ну, что с тобой)?"
crawled [krLld] decrepit [dI`krepIt] wreck [rek] patient [`peIS(q)nt]
I had walked into that reading-room a happy, healthy man. I crawled out a decrepit wreck.

I went to my medical man. He is an old chum of mine, and feels my pulse, and looks at my tongue, and talks about the weather, all for nothing, when I fancy I'm ill; so I thought I would do him a good turn by going to him now. "What a doctor wants," I said, "is practice. He shall have me. He will get more practice out of me than out of seventeen hundred of your ordinary, commonplace patients, with only one or two diseases each." So I went straight up and saw him, and he said:

"Well, what's the matter with you?"
I said:
"I will not take up your time, dear boy (я не стану отнимать у тебя время, мой дорогой: «дорогой парень»; boy — мальчик, парень), with telling you what is the matter with me (рассказывая тебе, что со мной = чем я болен). Life is brief, and you might pass away before I had finished (жизнь коротка, и ты можешь умереть прежде, чем я закончу; to pass away — исчезать, проходить; умереть, скончаться). But I will tell you what is not the matter with me (но я скажу тебе, чем я не болен). I have not got housemaid's knee (у меня нет воспаления сумки надколенника). Why I have not got housemaid's knee, I cannot tell you (почему у меня его нет, не могу тебе сказать); but the fact remains that I have not got it (но факт остается /фактом/, что у меня нет его). Everything else, however, I have got (все остальное, тем не менее, у меня есть)."

And I told him how I came to discover it all (и я рассказал ему, как я смог обнаружить все это; to tell; to come to — приходить /к какому-либо положению дел, выводу, в какое-либо состояние/, достигать /чего либо/).

Then he opened me and looked down me (потом он раздел меня и осмотрел /сверху/ донизу; to open — открывать/ся/, раскрывать/ся/; to look — смотреть, глядеть; осматривать), and clutched hold of my wrist (схватил меня за запястье; to clutch hold of — схватить что-либо; to clutch — схватить, зажать; hold — схватывание, сжатие, захват), and then he hit me over the chest when I wasn't expecting it (затем он ударил меня в грудь, когда я не ожидал этого) — a cowardly thing to do, I call it (трусливая вещь, я называю это = подлый номер, по-моему; coward — трус) — and immediately afterwards butted me with the side of his head (и тотчас же после этого боднул меня головой; to butt — ударять головой, бодать/ся/; side — сторона; бок; край). After that, he sat down and wrote out a prescription (затем он сел и выписал рецепт; after that — после того, затем; to write out), and folded it up and gave it me (сложил его и отдал мне; to give-gave-given), and I put it in my pocket and went out (я положил его в карман и вышел; to go out).

I said:
"I will not take up your time, dear boy, with telling you what is the matter with me. Life is brief, and you might pass away before I had finished. But I will tell you what is not the matter with me. I have not got housemaid's knee. Why I have not got housemaid's knee, I cannot tell you; but the fact remains that I have not got it. Everything else, however, I have got."

And I told him how I came to discover it all.

Then he opened me and looked down me, and clutched hold of my wrist, and then he hit me over the chest when I wasn't expecting it — a cowardly thing to do, I call it — and immediately afterwards butted me with the side of his head. After that, he sat down and wrote out a prescription, and folded it up and gave it me, and I put it in my pocket and went out.
I did not open it (я не разворачивал рецепт). I took it to the nearest chemist's, and handed it in (я взял = отнес его в ближайшую аптеку и подал /аптекарю/; chemist — химик; аптекарь; to hand in — подавать, вручать). The man read it, and then handed it back (человек прочитал его, а потом отдал обратно; to hand back — возвращать, протягивать назад).

He said he didn't keep it (он сказал, /что/ не держит такого = подобных вещей; to keep — держать, хранить).

I said (я сказал):
"You are a chemist (вы аптекарь)?"

He said:

"I am a chemist (я аптекарь). If I was a co-operative stores and family hotel combined (если бы я был универсальным магазином и семейным пансионом в одном лице; co-operative — совместный, кооперативный; family — семья; combined — комбинированный, объединенный, совместный), I might be able to oblige you (я мог бы угодить вам; to be able to — быть в состоянии, мочь; to oblige — делать одолжение, угождать). Being only a chemist hampers me (то, что я всего лишь аптекарь, мешает мне /выполнить вашу просьбу/; to hamper — препятствовать, мешать, затруднять)."
chemist [`kemIst] hotel [hqu`tel] co-operative [kqu`Op(q)rqtIv]
I did not open it. I took it to the nearest chemist's, and handed it in. The man read it, and then handed it back.

He said he didn't keep it.

I said:
"You are a chemist?"

He said:

"I am a chemist. If I was a co-operative stores and family hotel combined, I might be able to oblige you. Being only a chemist hampers me."
I read the prescription (я прочитал рецепт). It ran (он гласил; to run — бежать; гласить /о документе, тексте и т.д./; to run-ran-run):

"1 lb. beefsteak, with (1 фунт бифштекса с; lb. = libra — фунт /мера веса, около 454 г/)

1 pt. bitter beer every 6 hours (1 пинтой горького пива каждые 6 часов; pt. = pint — пинта /мера объема жидких и сыпучих тел, 0,57 л/).
1 ten-mile walk every morning (1 десятимильная прогулка каждое утро).
1 bed at 11 sharp every night (1 кровать в 11 ровно каждый вечер).

And don't stuff up your head with things you don't understand (и не забивай себе голову вещами, /которых/ не понимаешь)."

I followed the directions, with the happy result (я последовал этим указаниям, с /тем/ счастливым/благополучным результатом) — speaking for myself (говоря за себя; to speak for oneself — говорить о собственных чувствах; говорить за себя) — that my life was preserved, and is still going on (что моя жизнь была сохранена, и все еще продолжается).
hour [`auq] result [rI`zAlt] preserved [prI`zq:vd]
I read the prescription. It ran:

"1 lb. beefsteak, with

1 pt. bitter beer every 6 hours.
1 ten-mile walk every morning.
1 bed at 11 sharp every night.

And don't stuff up your head with things you don't understand."

I followed the directions, with the happy result — speaking for myself — that my life was preserved, and is still going on.
In the present instance (в настоящем случае, тогда), going back to the liver-pill circular (возвращаясь к проспекту о пилюлях от /болезней/ печени), I had the symptoms, beyond all mistake (у меня были эти симптомы, без всякого сомнения; beyond — за пределами, вне; mistake — ошибка, заблуждение), the chief among them being "a general disinclination to work of any kind (главным среди них был «общее нерасположение к труду всякого рода»; work — работа; труд; занятие, дело)."

What I suffer in that way no tongue can tell (что я испытываю = как страдаю в этом смысле — не пересказать словами: «никакой язык не может рассказать»; to suffer — страдать, испытывать, переносить; way — путь, дорога; отношение, аспект). From my earliest infancy I have been a martyr to it (с моего самого раннего детства я был мучеником из-за этого; infancy — раннее детство, младенчество). As a boy, the disease hardly ever left me for a day (когда я был мальчиком, болезнь едва ли когда-нибудь покидала меня на день = не покидала ни на день; as — как, в качестве; в бытность; hardly ever — очень редко, едва ли когда-нибудь; to leave — покидать, оставлять). They did not know, then, that it was my liver (они = окружающие не знали тогда, что /дело/ было в моей печени). Medical science was in a far less advanced state than now (медицинская наука находилась в значительно менее развитом состоянии, чем теперь; advanced — передовой, развитый; продвинутый), and they used to put it down to laziness (и люди обычно приписывали это /мое состояние/ лености; used to — используется для описания регулярных действий или состояний в прошлом; to put down — опускать; записывать /на чей-либо счет/; приписывать /чему-либо/).

"Why, you skulking little devil, you (эй ты, отлынивающий от работы чертенок; why — выражает различные эмоции /удивление, несогласие, нетерпение и т.д./; to skulkскрываться; уклоняться от работы /особенно притворяясь больным/)," they would say (говорили они), "get up and do something for your living, can't you (встань и сделай что-нибудь полезное, что ли; to do for a living — зарабатывать /чем-либо/ на жизнь)?" — not knowing, of course, that I was ill (не зная, конечно, что я болен).

chief [CJf] disinclination [,dIsInklI`neIS(q)n] martyr [`mRtq] science [`saIqns]

In the present instance, going back to the liver-pill circular, I had the symptoms, beyond all mistake, the chief among them being "a general disinclination to work of any kind."

What I suffer in that way no tongue can tell. From my earliest infancy I have been a martyr to it. As a boy, the disease hardly ever left me for a day. They did not know, then, that it was my liver. Medical science was in a far less advanced state than now, and they used to put it down to laziness.

"Why, you skulking little devil, you," they would say, "get up and do something for your living, can't you?" — not knowing, of course, that I was ill.
And they didn't give me pills (мне не давали пилюль); they gave me clumps on the side of the head (мне давали подзатыльник /по голове/; clump — заросли; ком, глыба; удар). And, strange as it may appear (и, как ни странно это может показаться), those clumps on the head often cured me — for the time being (те подзатыльники часто излечивали меня — на некоторое время; to cure — излечивать, исцелять). I have known one clump on the head have more effect upon my liver (я знаю, /что/ один подзатыльник оказывает большее действие на мою печень), and make me feel more anxious to go straight away then and there (и заставляет меня чувствовать больше желания пойти тотчас, сразу же; anxious — тревожный, беспокойный; сильно желающий), and do what was wanted to be done (и сделать /то/, что требовалось сделать), without further loss of time (без дополнительной потери времени = не теряя времени), than a whole box of pills does now (чем целая коробка пилюль оказывает теперь).

You know, it often is so (видите ли, так часто бывает) — those simple, old-fashioned remedies are sometimes more efficacious than all the dispensary stuff (/те/ простые, старомодные средства иногда более действенны, чем весь аптекарский персонал; dispensary — бесплатная аптека для бедняков; диспансер; амбулатория).

anxious [`xNkSqs] effect [I`fekt] remedy [`remIdI] efficacious [,efI`keISqs]
And they didn't give me pills; they gave me clumps on the side of the head. And, strange as it may appear, those clumps on the head often cured me — for the time being. I have known one clump on the head have more effect upon my liver, and make me feel more anxious to go straight away then and there, and do what was wanted to be done, without further loss of time, than a whole box of pills does now.

You know, it often is so — those simple, old-fashioned remedies are sometimes more efficacious than all the dispensary stuff.

We sat there for half-an-hour, describing to each other our maladies (мы просидели полчаса, описывая друг другу свои болезни). I explained to George and William Harris how I felt when I got up in the morning (я объяснил Джорджу и Уильяму Гаррису, как я чувствую себя, когда встаю утром; to feel; to get up — вставать, подниматься), and William Harris told us how he felt when he went to bed (Уильям Гаррис рассказал нам, как он чувствует себя, когда ложится спать: «идет к кровати»; to tell; to go to bed); and George stood on the hearth-rug (Джордж встал на каминный коврик; to stand — стоять, вставать; hearth — домашний очаг; камин), and gave us a clever and powerful piece of acting (и дал нам искусное и яркое представление; to give-gave-given; clever — умный; искусный, умелый; powerful — крепкий, мощный; убедительный, яркий; piece — кусок, часть; литературное или музыкальное произведение; acting — выступление, игра /актера/, представление), illustrative of how he felt in the night (показывая, как он чувствует себя ночью; illustrative — иллюстративный, пояснительный).

George fancies he is ill (Джордж воображает, /будто/ он болен); but there's never anything really the matter with him, you know (но никогда ничего плохого в действительности с ним нет, видите ли).

We sat there for half-an-hour, describing to each other our maladies. I explained to George and William Harris how I felt when I got up in the morning, and William Harris told us how he felt when he went to bed; and George stood on the hearth-rug, and gave us a clever and powerful piece of acting, illustrative of how he felt in the night.

George fancies he is ill; but there's never anything really the matter with him, you know.

At this point, Mrs. Poppets knocked at the door to know if we were ready for supper (в это время миссис Поппетс постучала/сь/ в дверь, чтобы узнать, готовы ли мы к ужину; at this point — на этой стадии, здесь). We smiled sadly at one another (мы улыбнулись печально друг другу), and said we supposed we had better try to swallow a bit (и сказали, /что/ думаем, нам лучше попробовать проглотить немного = следовало бы немного поесть; to suppose — допускать, думать, /пред/полагать). Harris said a little something in one's stomach often kept the disease in check (Гаррис сказал, немного пищи: «чего-нибудь» в желудке часто предохраняет от болезни; to keep in check — держать под контролем, сдерживать); and Mrs. Poppets brought the tray in (и миссис Поппетс внесла поднос; to bring in — вносить, приносить), and we drew up to the table (мы пододвинулись к столу; to draw up to; to draw-drew-drawn), and toyed with a little steak and onions, and some rhubarb tart (и съели немного бифштекса с луком и пирога с ревенем; to toy — играть; вертеть в руках, забавляться; steak — кусок мяса/рыбы для жарки; бифштекс; tart — домашний торт, пирог).

I must have been very weak at the time (я, должно быть, был очень слаб в то время); because I know, after the first half-hour or so (потому что, через полчаса: «после первой половины часа» или около того), I seemed to take no interest whatever in my food (я, казалось, не проявлял какого бы то ни было интереса = потерял всякий интерес к еде) — an unusual thing for me (необычная вещь для меня) — and I didn't want any cheese (и я не хотел сыра).
