ANNOTATION
These results of research on the principles of selection and evaluation of lucerna seed material
to generate a population possessing both high yield of fodder mass and, particularly critical, increased
seed productiveness have been presented by the authors. The main external habitational feature is the
shape of the plant. Developing the selection principles and evaluation of the initial material on the
structure of seed productivity, allowed the authors to model varieties with high yields of both fodder
mass and seeds. Through the study of biological features of plant growth and development and the
influence of environmental factors that reduce the potential seed productivity, we have developed and
tested an effective method of breeding lucerne with high seed productivity. Practical application of this
method of breeding has demonstrated the possibility to combine in a new
variety two indicators of
variety efficiency, such as fodder and seed productivity, which are extremely difficult to combine, and
to reduce the period of variety creation from 18-20 years to 12-14 years.
