5. Correlation of articles with other determiners.
6. The paradigmatic presentation of articles.
7. The situational presentation of articles.

Key terms: determination, determiner (lexical or grammatical), definite article, indefinite article, zero article (meaningful non-use, absence of an article), identification, individualization, classifying (relative) generalization, classification, absolute generalization, abstraction, substitution tests, insertion tests, contrast tests, omission, lexicalization, situational rules, unique objects, thematic (old) information and rhematic (new) information, limiting (restricting, particularizing) and descriptive attributes, the semantic category of “definiteness – indefiniteness – generalization” (determiners of definiteness, determiners of indefiniteness, determiners of generalization)
I. Consider the following sentences illustrating different types of semantic determination (or restriction):
1. The dog is an animal.
2. A dog is an animal.
3. Any dog is an animal.
4. Dogs are animals.
5. All dogs are animals.
6. I see a dog.
7.The dog is under the table.
II. Explain the use of each article.
Discuss whether or not you could substitute one article for another. If yes, discuss how the meaning of the sentence would change. If no, discuss why you cannot substitute one article for another in this instance.
