1. I would not listen to her, I thought her hard and cruel. (Du Maurier). 2. She put her hands up to her cheeks, but her eyes seemed to look right into his. (Galsworthy). 3. He went up to his bedroom to get a book, and his heart began to beat violently, for she was in there making the bed. (Galsworthy). 4. The cuckoos and a thousand birds were singing; the little streams were very bright. (Galsworthy). 5. Spreading four square in the midst of the British Kingdom is the inland Irish Sea; while for six hundred miles off the northwestern shores is the border of the ocean. (Mackinder). 6. In Britain ... even the leeward slopes receive abundant moisture; yet the rain-shadows to eastward and north-eastward of the hills are distinctly indicated upon the map. (Mackinder). 7. The overthrow of his (Cymberline's) dynasty marked the definite establishment of Rome in Britain so the Romans replaced the Celtic stockades near Colchester and St. Albans by the cities of Camulodunum and Verulamium. II. Define the type of the following polipredicative constructions.

The continental shallow is everywhere covered with debris of gravel, sand and silt, whereas the floor of the abyss is laid with a grey ooze ... (Mackinder). 4. It's a good thing she went away with you. (Greene). 5. Ashurst held out his hand; on the upturned palm he could feel the dew. (Galsworthy). 6. I was not unhappy, not much afraid, yet I wept. (Bronte). 7. "It is a pity your leg is hurting you." (Galsworthy) 8. While they were driving he had not been taking notice... (Galsworthy) 9. "It's I who am not good enough for you." (Galsworthy) 10. But in a last word to the wise of these days let it be said that of all who give gifts these two were the wisest (O.Henry).
