ing. Everyone has some kind of prejudice, because we all have ideas of right and wrong, of truth and
falsehood. Our prejudices associated with patriotism, race, religion, ethnic class, affect our thinking. To
become a critical thinker does not mean that a person has no opinion; rather, he is attentive to ideas that
can change his opinion. Foreign language teachers must be attentive to the information and data used in
the classroom to ask questions to our prejudices. The following example shows how to apply such a job to
foreign language lessons.
Activity 2
This exercise can be formulated as a formal and non-formal, depending on the level of students. In order
to enlighten the students in their prejudices, it is necessary to give them a general idea or a specific word
in the debate, or to complete the proposal (open-ended sentences to complete).
For example, you can ask students what feelings, ideas, or thoughts appear in them, when they hear the
following words and phrases:
School or School is a place where I _________.
Women or Women should_________________.
Teachers or Teachers are always _____________.
Marriage or Marriage is never ______________.
Education or Education is __________________.
Students can learn about their prejudices and superstitions of their classmates, discussing their answers.
Critically thinking people - those who know the values on which their judgments are based. Students
should be directed to determine their values, because the students condemn written or said, depends on
whether they share the values of the author or speaker.
Activity 3
Students write or discuss their five most important values, and then arrange them from the most import-
ant to least important. The teacher gives an example for their students. Here are some examples:
- I value family, friends, money, education, and career.
- Family is most valuable to me because my family has supported me throughout my life.
- My friends are valuable to me because, through them, I can share my happiness, unhappiness, and
other important matters.
- Money is valuable to me because it enables me to live comfortably.
- Education is important to me because it excites me and makes me a more interesting person.
- My career is valuable to me because people respect me for what I do.
Students arrange these values in order of importance, justifying their answers. Such exercises give
students an opportunity to learn about their values and understand why they believe in it. And these tasks
develop and train their speaking and ability to understand English.
Habits can be very useful, especially those that we often repeat, such as diet, or a daily trip to the In-
stitute. Without habits, we would have to spend a lot of time to solve our future actions. But on the other
hand, when we need to think creatively and critically, we must give up our habits. Good one who thinks
creatively and critically, and easily disclaims habits. Must have imaginative if one method does not work,
then try a new one. Instead of seeing everything in one direction, they see a lot of opportunities. For the
development of inventing new ideas there can be made the following exercises that may help students to
change their habits or negative thinking.
Activity 4
Ask students to keep an appreciation journal in which they write about everything they appreciate about
themselves, their lessons, or even their teachers. If they look puzzled, direct them by giving them the fol-
lowing sentences to complete:
- I like English lessons because _____.
- I appreciate my family because _____.
- I love the way my friend speaks with me because _____.
- I enjoy school because _____.
The application of critical thinking in the classroom of English enables and inspires students to discuss,
criticize and make a determination about the knowledge they already have, as well as the information
that they receive in the future. For the introduction and development of critical thinking of their students,
teachers set tasks and adjust their training programs and materials so as to contribute to such thinking.
