HISTORY IKAROS
IKAROS is an "Interplanetary Kite-craft Accelerated by Radiation Of the Sun" (an interplanetary umbrella accelerated by solar radiation). Developed by the Japanese aerospace agency JAXA and launched into space in 2010 (твенти тэн)


IKAROS MISSION
Their missions, including the Akane mission, was launched in 2010 0 (твенти тэн) to study the atmosphere of Venus, and the BepiColombo mission to study Mercury


SOLAR SAIL
One of the most famous and successful satellites equipped with a solar sail is the IKAROS satellite. The cost of developing and launching IKAROS was about $16 million.

STRUCTURE OF THE SOLAR SAIL MEMBRANE
The basis of the sail membrane is:

  • Polyimide (PI, Kapton),

  • Polyethylene terephthalate (PET, Maylar);

  • IKAROS sail is made of a 7.5 micrometer thick polyimide film with an aluminum coating. The sail also has 52 solar cells made of polyimide, aluminum, and copper.



CONCLUSION
SATELLITE IKAROS was an important achievement in the field of space research, as it was the first space probe to use a solar sail for motion control.
