беспокоили.
One morning they would appear in the grass, and by
night they would have faded peacefully away.

вечер увядали.
But one day, from a seed blown from no one knew where,
a new flower had come up; and the little prince had
watched very closely over this small sprout which was
not like any other small sprouts on his planet.
А этот пророс однажды из зерна,

Маленький принц не сводил глаз с
крохотного ростка, не похожего на все
остальные ростки и былинки.
It might, you see, have been a new kind of baobab.

The shrub soon stopped growing, and began to get ready
to produce a flower.
Но кустик быстро перестал тянуться
ввысь, и на нем появился бутон.
The little prince, who was present at the first appearance
of a huge bud, felt at once that some sort of miraculous
apparition must emerge from it.

таких огромных бутонов и
предчувствовал, что увидит чудо.
But the flower was not satisfied to complete the
preparations for her beauty in the shelter of her green
chamber.
А неведомая гостья, скрытая в стенах
своей зеленой комнатки, все готовилась,
все прихорашивалась.
She chose her colors with the greatest care.
Она заботливо подбирала краски.
She dressed herself slowly. She adjusted her petals one
by one.
Она наряжалась неторопливо, один за
другим примеряя лепестки.
She did not wish to go out into the world all rumpled,
like the field poppies.
Она не желала явиться на свет
встрепанная, точно какой-нибудь мак.
It was only in the full radiance of her beauty that she
wished to appear.
Она хотела показаться во всем блеске
своей красоты.
Oh, yes! She was a coquettish creature!
Да, это была ужасная кокетка!
And her mysterious adornment lasted for days and days.

Then one morning, exactly at sunrise, she suddenly
showed herself.

And, after working with all this painstaking precision,
she yawned and said:

"Ah! I am scarcely awake.
— Ах, я насилу проснулась...
I beg that you will excuse me.

My petals are still all disarranged..."

But the little prince could not restrain his admiration:

"Oh! How beautiful you are!"
— Как вы прекрасны!
"Am I not?" the flower responded, sweetly.
— Да, правда? - был тихий ответ.
"And I was born at the same moment as the sun..."
- И заметьте, я родилась вместе с
солнцем.
The little prince could guess easily enough that she was
not any too modest — but how moving — and exciting —
she was!
Маленький принц, конечно, догадался,
что удивительная гостья не страдает
избытком скромности, зато она была так
прекрасна, что дух захватывало!
"I think it is time for breakfast," she added an instant
later.
А она вскоре заметила: — Кажется, пора
завтракать.
"If you would have the kindness to think of my needs — "
Будьте так добры, позаботьтесь обо мне...

And the little prince, completely abashed, went to look
for a sprinkling-can of fresh water.
Маленький принц очень смутился,
разыскал лейку и полил цветок ключевой
водой.
So, he tended the flower. So, too, she began very quickly
to torment him with her vanity — which was, if the truth
be known, a little difficult to deal with.
Скоро оказалось, что красавица горда и
обидчива, и Маленький принц совсем с
ней измучился.
One day, for instance, when she was speaking of her four
thorns, she said to the little prince:
У нее было четыре шипа, и однажды она
сказала ему:
"Let the tigers come with their claws!"
— Пусть приходят тигры, не боюсь я их
когтей!

"There are no tigers on my planet," the little prince
objected.
— На моей планете тигры не водятся, -
возразил Маленький принц.
"And, anyway, tigers do not eat weeds."
- И потом, тигры не едят траву.
"I am not a weed," the flower replied, sweetly.
— Я не трава, - тихо заметил цветок.
"Please excuse me..."
— Простите меня...
"I am not at all afraid of tigers," she went on, "but I have
a horror of drafts.
— Нет, тигры мне не страшны, но я
ужасно боюсь сквозняков.
I suppose you wouldn't have a screen for me?"
У вас нет ширмы?

"A horror of drafts — that is bad luck, for a plant,"
remarked the little prince, and added to himself,
"Растение, а боится сквозняков... очень
странно... - подумал Маленький принц.

"This flower is a very complex creature..."
- Какой трудный характер у этого цветка".
"At night I want you to put me under a glass globe.
— Когда настанет вечер, накройте меня
колпаком.
It is very cold where you live.
У вас тут слишком холодно.
In the place I came from — "
Очень неуютная планета.
But she interrupted herself at that point.
Там, откуда я прибыла...
She had come in the form of a seed.
Она не договорила.
She could not have known anything of any other worlds.
Ведь ее занесло сюда, когда она была еще
зернышком.
Embarrassed over having let herself be caught on the
verge of such a naïve untruth, she coughed two or three
times, in order to put the little prince in the wrong.
Она ничего не могла знать о других
мирах. Глупо лгать, когда тебя так легко
уличить! Красавица смутилась, потом
кашлянула раз-другой, чтобы Маленький
принц почувствовал, как он перед нею
виноват:
"The screen?"
— Где же ширма?
"I was just going to look for it when you spoke to me..."
— Я хотел пойти за ней, но не мог же я
вас не дослушать!
Then she forced her cough a little more so that he should
suffer from remorse just the same.
Тогда она закашляла сильнее: пускай его
все-таки помучит совесть!
So the little prince, in spite of all the good will that was
inseparable from his love, had soon come to doubt her.
Хотя Маленький принц и полюбил
прекрасный цветок, и рад был ему
служить, но вскоре в душе его
пробудились сомнения.
He had taken seriously words which were without
importance, and it made him very unhappy.
Пустые слова он принимал близко к
сердцу и стал чувствовать себя очень
несчастным.

"I ought not to have listened to her," he confided to me
one day.
— Напрасно я ее слушал, - доверчиво
сказал он мне однажды.
"One never ought to listen to the flowers.
- Никогда не надо слушать, что говорят
цветы.
One should simply look at them and breathe their
fragrance.
Надо просто смотреть на них и дышать их
ароматом.
Mine perfumed all my planet. But I did not know how to
take pleasure in all her grace.
Мой цветок напоил благоуханием всю
мою планету, а я не умел ему радоваться.
This tale of claws, which disturbed me so much, should
only have filled my heart with tenderness and pity."
Эти разговоры о когтях и тиграх... Они
должны бы меня растрогать, а я

разозлился...
And he continued his confidences:
И еще он признался:
"The fact is that I did not know how to understand
anything!
— Ничего я тогда не понимал!
I ought to have judged by deeds and not by words.
Надо было судить не по словам, а по
делам.
She cast her fragrance and her radiance over me.
Она дарила мне свой аромат, озаряла мою
жизнь.
I ought never to have run away from her...
Я не должен был бежать.
I ought to have guessed all the affection that lay behind
her poor little stratagems.
За этими жалкими хитростями и
уловками надо было угадать нежность.
Flowers are so inconsistent!
Цветы так непоследовательны!
But I was too young to know how to love her …"
Но я был слишком молод, я еще не умел
любить.
