Installing a pilot sea level monitoring station

The strategy initially focuses on the installation of a pilot station consisting of a bottom pressure to demonstrate the viability of a permanent cal/val site for satellite altimetry. The general idea was that the same quality-controlled data had to be re-usable for as many purposes as possible taking into account that in situ monitoring is an expensive activity. The sites for potential installation along the surrounding coasts of Baku were inspected in detail during the previous visit in September 2007. We determined that the pier location at Absheron port (Fig. 3-5) represented the best available place to site the station. The location offers safe and good protection from harsh conditions for the measuring equipment with the possibility of data logging and transmission system to be housed somewhere. In addition, a sea level gauge in Absheron could also provide useful measurements to the local port authority.

The works were done between June 8, 2008 and June 13, 2008 in excellent weather conditions with calm sea and variable winds through the period. The material (see Table 1) was airlifted in advance and was stored at Port Absheron. The bottom pressure recorder was deployed at a depth of about 5 m without any difficulty by Michel Calzas. A scheme of the final installation is illustrated in Fig. 6. The field activities are documented through a series of high resolution pictures, some of them shown in Fig.7-8. We made two independent data acquisitions: (1) duration of 68 hours with a sampling rate 10 minutes and averaging interval of 40 second with single measurement every 1 second; (2) duration of 2 hours with a sampling rate of 1 minute and an averaging interval of 10 seconds with single measurements every 1 second. The final operational setting was a sampling rate of 5 minutes with an averaging interval of 40 seconds with single measurements every 1 second. Due to the duration of the internal battery, we will be able to collect around one year of data.
