RUSSIAN MODERNIZATION ACTORS: PROBLEMS AND PERSPECTIVES
Based on historiographic analysis the article presents two opposing approaches towards the inter-
pretation of the driving forces of the Russian Empire modernization and the role of the state in
its implementation. The author provides arguments in favor of an heuristic value of assessing the
general readiness of the country’s human resources for modernizational transformations on the
basis of the level of education, quality of life, adaptational capabilities, etc. analysis. A new meth-
odological approach towards the study of Russian modernization processes of the imperial period
was proposed based on identification of their main actors’ role, actor structures evolution, and the
reconstruction of the actors’ modernization strategies. This approach facilitated better understand-
ing of the regularities and specifics of transition from the traditional to modern society under the
conditions of the Russian Empire.
