BLENDED LEARNING IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING
Blended learning approach in teaching foreign language has become
a matter of considerable interest to language teachers all over the world.
As opposed to pure e-learning which refers to using only electronic media
to learn, blended learning supplement traditional face-to-face teaching and
learning environment with different kinds of technology-based instruction.
Many higher education institutions today are using blended learning as a
supplementary means in developing students’ vocabulary knowledge. The
present study aimed at investigating the effects of blended learning strategy in
teaching foreign language and the students’ perceptions of blended learning
approach in learning vocabulary.
Keywords: blended learning, traditional learning, foreign language
learning, online learning.
INTRODUCTION
Learning a new language takes time and dedication. Once you do, being fluent
in a second language offers numerous benefits and opportunities. Learning a second
language is exciting and beneficial at all ages. It offers practical, intellectual and
many aspirational benefits.
But «What’s the best way to learn a language?» «What’s the quickest way to
learn new words?» «How can I sound like a native speaker?» «Do I really have
to study grammar?».
Foreign language learners ask themselves these kinds of questions all the time.
We all want to use effective study methods so we can learn a language
quickly and speak it well.
How can we know if we’re spending our time on the right things?
Everywhere you turn, language teachers are using different methods and
giving conflicting advice. Some learn vocabulary by memorizing word lists, others
absorb it naturally by reading. Some concentrate on the sounds first, others prefer
to improve their pronunciation as they go along. Some swear by grammar drills,
others never open a textbook.
Fortunately, language learners aren’t the only ones who’ve been puzzling
over these questions. Linguists, the people who study the science of language,
have spent decades observing how people learn languages. And while they don’t
have all the answers yet, they have discovered a lot of cool stuff about what works
and what doesn’t.
One of the blended solutions for Language learning is Blended learning.
Blended learning is a quite new method of teaching. This system of training/
teaching which combines the best aspects and advantages of teaching in a classroom
and interactive or distance education, and creates available and motivating courses
for students where educational process represents the certain system, consisting of
different parts which function in constant interrelation with each other, forming
a certain integer. Blended learning is the very system in which its constituent
components of full-time and distance education process interact harmoniously.
Under a condition if this interaction is methodically well-organized, in result we get
the students’ high level of knowledge. Thus, the model of blended learning is not
just use of ICT in independent work of students at home or in a media library after
school, blended learning model is a single, holistic learning process, suggesting
that some of the cognitive activity of students is carried out in the classroom under
the supervision of a teacher, and some part activities of the students, is proposed
for distant form, with a predominance of independent work individually or with
