Descripti
ve onomastics:
the foundations
of such names
give direct or
indirect
characterization
to
the
characters.
- Most of these names contain the
essence of the character and the fiction
on the whole.
- The surname Bovary - from
Fr. "bovin" ("the bull") - contains a
hint of something rough, peasant,
down-to-earth (which becomes the
stark contrast to a graceful and
romantic name Emma of the main
character).

Characterizing
are
also
nicknames
which
represent

privileged category of onyms as they
are allowed to give the direct
characterization of any external or
internal qualities of the character.

In
the
novel
"The
Sentimental
Education"
the
nickname of Frederic Moreau’s
mistress la Maréchale is to highlight
not only her specific occupation but
also the brightness and the strength
of the nature of the image (in
particular, Frederick is obviously
weaker than this woman and often
subordinates to her will).
Neutral
onomastics
the value
of the base and
the form does
- Most of these names are given
to positive or secondary characters.
- In the novel "Madame
Bovary" the name Rouault of
Emma’s father has neither positive
nor negative connotation.

Current issues of linguistics

not reflect the
personality and
the behavior of
the character.
- On the other hand, neutral
names given to the main characters can
be regarded as a more sophisticated
method of characteristics (compared to
"speaking" names). Taken from real
life, they can be correlated with a
certain epoch or social environment.
- Thus, in the period of
creation of the novel "The
Sentimental Education" in the town
of Nogent-on-Seine (scene of the
novel) really lived the petty
bourgeois family by the name of
Moreau inherited by the G. Flaubert
character.
- In some cases neutral names
underline the fact that the character
(even the main) is devoid of any
special, exceptional qualities and does
not stand out from the crowd.
- In the novel "Madame
Bovary" the name of a very
important character of Charles
Bovary is to underline the
mediocrity of the image.
