Working at Height
Falls from height are one of the main causes of injuries and deaths in construction working areas. When you risk a fall or when you are working 1.3 meters or more in fall risk working at height procedure require that suitable fall protection must be available and used.
It should be noted that falls kill over 12,000 people a year with 1200 of these being work-related. In addition, approximately 33,000 people are disabled every year from falling on stairs. Please see the chart below showing construction fatal accidents & its general causes. %43 of those fatal accidents are occurred while working at height.
There are many scaffolds, ladders or temporary accesses in our work areas, it is imported that all employees understand safe practices to be used for scaffolds and ladders.
One safeguard is the use of tags on scaffolds and ladders. Only scaffolds and ladders displaying a green tag are complete and available for use. If no tag is present, or a red tag is displayed, the access is not to be used. Even when a green tag is in place, employees must assess the weather conditions (such as ice, snow or high winds), any modifications on scaffold or ladders and determine if it is safe to proceed.
Ladders should be used primarily as a means of access, not as a working platform. Both hands must be free when ascending or descending ladders. Tools and materials should be carried in either a suitable shoulder bag or belt, or be hoisted up afterwards. Secure the ladder at the top and bottom as soon as it is placed
Keep three points of contact at all time when using ladder.
Step Ladders are not designed to be used as supports for a working platform. They are inherently unstable. Where they are not being used for their intended purpose (for access or to carry out minor works or routine maintenance), other safe work methods such as scaffolding or elevated work platforms must be used. Always consider a step ladder is the best and safest means of doing the job.
Scaffolding should always be checked before it’s used. Any person who is going to work on a scaffold should check to see that nothing has been altered or removed before they start working.
Do not forget that you must also be wearing fall protection equipment when erecting any scaffold.
It is important that supervisors and employees work together to identify any hazards from working at height, and select the method of fall prevention that is most compatible with the type of work being done.
