PERIDOT

Sanjana Bagchi, group 24. Scientific adviser is Tatyana Tishakova

Peridot is the best known gem variety of olivine, a species name for a series of magnesium-iron rich silicate minerals. This bright yellow-green to green gemstone has caught the fancy of humans for thousands of years. Some historians even suspect that at least some of the "emeralds" worn by Cleopatra were actually peridot. Much of its recent popularity can be explained by its currently being recognized as the birthstone for the month of August, people wear the stone because it is supposed to bring the wearer success, peace, and good luck.

Peridot has been belived to cure diseases of liver and difficulties with digestion. It aids in physical detoxification and cure problems in kidney and bladder. It heals ulcers, constipation and irritabla bowel syndrome. Peridot regenerates daed tissues and strengthens metabolism. It benefits skin. When placed on abdomen, peridot aids in giving birth to baby by strengthening muscular contraction while reducing pain. Peridot is used as tonic to treat diseases associated with glands. Peridot is used to counter negative emotions and cure depression. Rings of peridot calms nervous system and banishes lathergy. It attrscts love and calms anger. It treats emotional disorders. It cures phobias associated with dark.

CITRINE

Adhiraj Pathak, group 24. Scientific adviser is Tatyana Tishakova

The name is derived from the colour – “The yellow of Lemon”. There are not many gemstones of yellow colour in the world of jwells.

Colour – Yellow, Golden Yellow, Yellow orange, Yellow green. Lusture – Viterous. Transperancy – Transparent and Translucent. Hardness – 7(MOHS) Common Location – Brazil, Africa, USA

HISTORY. Historically, It has been found in Spain, on the Scottish island of Arran, in France, Hungary and in several mines overseas. Perhaps the citrine would not have been talked about any more at all if in the middle of the 18th century, it had not been for the discovery that amethyst and smoky quartz can also be renderd yellow by so called burning.

USES AND HEALING PROPERTIES OF CITRINE. Citrine is used as jewelleries, specially in rings as they are shiny and have attractive colours. It is said that citrine’s healing is mainly focused on dispelling negeativity. But other powers are attributed to this yellow gemstones as well. Some of this power focus on the kidney and urinary tracts, likey because of yellow colour of citrine. Other areas where they can help healing is stomach helping with digestive problems and other elements.

HALITE

Uwayzor Onome Sue-Ellen, group 25. Scientific adviser is Svetlana Kozub

Halite: is the mineral name but commonly known as rock salts, sodium chloride (NaCl). It forms isometric crystals, the mineral is typically colorless or white but may also be lite blue, dark blue, purple, pink, red, orange, yellow or gray depending on the amount and type of impurities. It commonly occurs with other evaporate deposit minerals such as sulfates, halides and borates. Its luster is vitreous, transparent and optical property isotropic.

Occurrence: halite occurs in vast beds of sedimentary evaporate minerals that result from the drying up of enclosed lakes, playas and seas. The salt beds may be hundreds of meters thick and underlie broad areas, when buried deeply they can erupt to form salt domes. Deposits are in Ohio, Kansas, New Mexico, New york, Canada, Pakistan and France. Halite crystals are termed hopper crystals and appear to be ‘’skeletons’’ of the typical cubes. Halite flowers are rare stalactites of curling fibers of halite that are found in certain arid caves of Australia’s Nullarbor Plain

Uses: halite is often used both residentially and municipally for managing ice, because brine(a solution of water and salt) has a lower freezing point than water, putting salt or salt water on ice that is near 0 degree Celsius(32 degree Fahrenheit) will cause it to melt the ice. (This effect is called freezing-point depression). It is not necessary to use so much salt the ice is completely melted, rather mixture of sand and salt on roads during and after a snow storm to improve traction. Salt is also used extensively in cooking as a flavor enhancer and to cure a wide variety of foods such as bacon and fish, and also in the preservation of meat. Larger pieces can be ground in a salt mill as finishing salt. It is also used for the electric chair.

In Medicine: rock salt is used homeopathically for sneezing, colds, eczema, hives, thrush, menstrual problems, and migraine. In orthodox medicine sodium chloride is used for dehydration, to irrigate eye, to relieve nasal congestion, and as mouthwash. We have the normal saline or dextrose saline (A little add of sugar to reduce the concentration) and can be taken intravenously.

CELESTINE

Satkaranpreet Singh, group 25. Scientific adviser is Svetlana Kozub

Celestine or celestite (SrSO4) is a mineral consisting of strontium sulfate. The mineral is named for its occasional delicate blue color. Celestine is the principal source of the element strontium, commonly used in fireworks and in various metal alloys.

Celestine occurs as crystals, and also in compact massive and fibrous forms. It is mostly found in sedimentary rocks, often associated with the minerals gypsum, anhydrite, and halite.

The mineral is found worldwide, usually in small quantities. Pale blue crystal specimens are found in Madagascar.

The skeletons of the protozoan Acantharea are made of celestine, unlike those of other radiolarians which are made of silica.

In carbonate marine sediments, burial dissolution is a recognised mechanism of celestine precipitation.

Celestine crystals are found in some geodes. The world's largest known geode, a celestine geode 35 feet (10.7 m) in diameter at its widest point, is located near the village of Put-in-Bay, Ohio, on South Bass Island in Lake Erie. The geode has been converted into a viewing cave, Crystal Cave, with the crystals which once composed the floor of the geode removed. The geode has celestine crystals as wide as 18 inches (46 cm) across, estimated to weigh up to 300 pounds (135 kg) each.
