This article examined the description of development of the sociolinguistic
competence in CEFR and compared it with the view on this competence in Kazakhstan.
The article also identified the reasons why this competence is not paid enough attention
to and as a result is not developed enough in Kazakhstan. To address this issue the article
focused on 3 ways to develop the competence in students of higher education during
English lessons. These are watching reality show episodes on YouTube in particular
Bachelor, participating in the comment section in YouTube and Role-playing. The
activities are suggested in accordance with the level of students’ active participation; the
availability of resources in Kazakhstan was also taken into account.
Key words: competences, sociolinguistics, Kazakhstan, CEFR
Introduction Sociolinguistic competence is an integral part of the language. One might consider
it obvious; however with a language being used nowadays to obtain knowledge and
professional development this competence can be neglected. Lacking this competence will
lead to inability of speakers to communicate effectively in the society and might lead to
intercultural/interpersonal misunderstandings. Take CLIL gaining a vast popularity
nowadays as an example, and consider that the most wide-spread external motive for
192
learning the language is taking exams. The problem how to develop this competence often
occurs in non-native English environment and it is both a challenge for a student and a
teacher.
