1.4 My Flat

1.4.1 Read and translate the text
My Flat
We live in a 16-storeyed block of flats in Strogino. It is situated in a very picturesque place not far from the Moskva River. There’s a big supermarket on the ground floor and it is very convenient to do everyday shopping.

Our flat is on the fifth floor. It is very comfortable and well-planed. We have all modern conveniences, such as central heating, electricity, gas, hot and cold running water and a telephone. There are three rooms, a kitchen, a bathroom and a hall in our flat. There’s also a balcony and we can enjoy a lovely view of the river. The largest room in our flat is the living room and we use it as a dining room and as a sitting room. In the middle of the room there is a big table and six chairs round it. Opposite the window there is a wall unit with lots of books, TV-set and a video cassette recorder. There are two comfortable armchairs and a small coffee table in the right-hand corner. There is also a sofa and an electric fire in our living room. We like the living room best of all, because in the evenings we gather there to have tea, watch TV, talk and rest.

My room is the smallest room in our flat, but it is very cosy and light. There is a bed, a wardrobe, a desk, an armchair and several bookshelves in my room. There is a thick carpet on the floor. The walls in my room are light-brown and there are some big posters on them. I like my room very much, but from time to time I change it round. I quite often move the bed and change the posters on the wall.

Our kitchen is large and light. It is very well-equipped. We have got a refrigerator, a freezer, a microwave oven, a coffeemaker and a toaster. We haven’t got a dishwasher yet, because it is very expensive. But I’m sure we shall buy it in the near future.

My Working Day
I am a first-year student of the University. My parents live in the village so I have to rent a flat. To make the rent smaller, I decided to share my flat with my friend. We study together in the University. My usual working day begins at 7-00 o’ clock. I don’t have an alarm clock and usually my roommate wakes me up. I turn on the radio and do my morning exercises while my friend takes a shower. I don’t take a bath in the morning because I don’t have enough time for it. I take a cool shower (that’s when I completely wake up), brush my teeth. After that I go to our room and get dressed. I brush my hair and then we have breakfast. My friend makes breakfast every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I have to serve on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. I love to listen to the latest news on the radio while I am eating and my friend prefers light music.

We leave the house at half past 7 and walk to the nearest bus-stop. We live rather far from the University and it usually takes half an hour to get there by bus. Sometimes when the weather is fine and we have enough time we walk to the University. It is very healthy to walk much.

The classes begin at 8-15 in the morning and they are over at 2-00 p.m. We have lectures in different subjects. As a rule we have five or six classes a day. Sometimes it is very hard to wait till they end.

Usually I don’t miss my classes because I want to pass my exams successfully. But sometimes I do, especially when the weather is fine and the classes are boring.

At 11-05 we have lunch. That’s my favourite time. That is the time to share the latest news and to chat. My friends and I prefer to go to the University’s canteen. The food is here tasty and affordable. At 11-35 we have to be back to our classes. During the working day we also have several short breaks that last for ten minutes.

Occasionally I have to stay at the University till 5 or 7 o’clock in the evening because I go to the library to get ready for my practical classes or to write a report. As a rule I have no free time on week-days. So by the end of the week I get very tired.

We come home at about 7 o’clock in the evening. We eat supper together and share the latest news or just discuss everyday problems.

After supper we wash dishes, drink coffee or tee and watch TV. Sometimes we go for a walk or visit our friends.

Some newspapers write that there are more than one thousand hobbies to spend one's time. Well it's very difficult to describe all the hobbies known in the world. The main thing is that all of them must be useful and help your cultural development.

Thousand of different activities are provided for all ages and abilities; young people, children, disabled people or anyone. You can do something you have never done before, such as hang- gliding. You can go pony-trekking or diving, climb mountains or play golf. You can choose a holiday with lots to do, or, if you prefer, you can do something quieter such as stay on a large boat: and do fishing.

There are also very special interests which are called environmental. They concern people who care much for things like air, the land, the sea, rivers, animals and plants, buildings and people.

So hobbies can be divided into four groups: doing things - reading, listening to music, watching TV, painting, mending things, playing games, entertaining friends e.g. having a drink together; making things - sewing, weaving, making carpets, making lace, making music etc. Singing or playing a musical instrument, cooking and baking, home decorating, modeling, needlework e. g. crocheting, knitting; collecting things - collecting stamps, maps, postcards, books, coins, autographs, shells, bottles, butterflies, crystals or other things; learning things - learning foreign languages, learning to play a musical instrument, studying art, literature and other subjects. Doing things is perhaps the most popular. It includes a wide range of activities from gardening to sailing and from chess to foreign travel. There is also a choice between mental and physical activities, indoor and outdoor pursuits.

People's special interests and hobbies are very important. They can be things not only to do but to talk about, which help you make it easier for everyone to get along together.
