В предложениях с Past Simple для указания на повторный характер действия употребляются слова every day / month/ year / week – каждый день / месяц / год / каждую неделю; often – часто, sometimes – иногда, never – никогда и т.д.

В таких предложениях для указания на прошедшее время часто употребляются слова yesterday – вчера, a week ago – неделю назад, last night – вчера вечером, last week / month / year – на прошлой неделе / в прошлом месяце / году, the other day – на днях и т.п.

Формы глагола в Past Continuous

•

  At three o’clock yesterday I was reading a book. – Я читала книгу вчера в три часа. (момент времени в прошлом точно указан обстоятельством времени – “at three o’clock yesterday”)

  While my mother was cooking dinner I was playing computer games. – Пока мама готовила ужин, я играл на компьютере. (два параллельных действия; одно является указанием на момент в прошлом для другого действия)
  
• 
  At the end of June I was preparing for my exams. – В конце июня я готовилась к экзаменам. (в конце июня, т.е. тогда, в тот период)

Глаголы состояния употребляются в Past Continuous только в тех случаях, когда подчеркивается, что это состояние – временное.

  She was always arguing! – Она постоянно ругалась.
  

• 
  He wrote he was arriving on Saturday. – Он написал, что приезжает в субботу.
