New Zealand

1 New Zealand is a group of islands situated in the Pacific Ocean. The main islands are the North Island and the South Island. New Zealand is rather a mountainous country. The Southern Alps running from north to south contains 17 peaks of 10,000 feet or over. There are many rivers and lakes which give beauty to thy countryside.

2 New Zealand has a temperate moist ocean climate. Like other re­gions cut off from the rest of the world, New Zealand has developed a flora with unique characteristics.

3 The total population of New Zealand is 3.400.000. The capital of New Zealand is Wellington. The majority of population is of British ori­gin. When the first Europeans came to New Zealand they found a Polyne­-

5 English is the universal language in New Zealand, although Maori, a language of the Polynesian group, is still spoken among the Maori population and is taught in the Maori schools.

1 Australia lies to the south-east of Asia between the Pacific and In­dian Oceans. Neighbouring countries include New Guinea to the north, New Zealand to the south-east and Indonesia to the north-west. The terri­tory of Australia, including the island of Tasmania, is 7,7 million sq.km.

2 The climate of Australia is relatively warm and dry, with no extreme cold and little frost. Long hours of sunshine are characteristic. There is comparatively little seasonal temperature change.

3 The population of Australia is more than 15 million. The population is unevenly distributed. One third of the continent is practically uninhab­ited. Most of the people live in the south-east part of the continent and some other coastal areas. The capital of Australia is Canberra. English is spoken by more than 99 per cent of the population.

4 The Australian continent was discovered early in the 17^th century when Dutch, Portuguese and Spanish explorers sailed along the coasts of Tasmania. In 1770 when captain James Cook charted the east coast, a se­rious exploration began.

5 In proportion to its total population, Australia is one of the most highly industrialized countries in the world. Nevertheless, both domestic and overseas markets are small. Industrial products are manufactured mainly for the domestic market. Only about 10 % are exported.
