AbstractOBJECTIVES:To investigate the safety and efficacy of complementary treatment of breast cancer patients with the standardized mistletoe extract (sME) HELIXOR in routine practice during aftercare through a multicenter comparative epidemiological cohort study with 53 randomly selected hospitals/practices representatively distributed in Germany, including oncologists, gynaecologists and general practitioners. PATIENTS AND METHODS:Data from 741 screened patients fulfilling the inclusion/exclusion criteria were checked. Of these, 681 patients were eligible for the final analysis of the study group (with sME n = 167) and the control group (n = 514). Efficacy (development of disease/therapy-induced signs and symptoms; quality of life) and safety (number and severity of adverse events) of complementary treatment in breast cancer patients treated with sME in the aftercare period were determined. RESULTS:Complementary treatment of breast cancer patients with sME during the aftercare period of approximately 5 years after terminating recommended standard therapies resulted in significantly fewer (p < 0.001) complaints of patients (56.3% study group versus 70.0% control group). The reduced number of disease/therapy-related sign/symptoms (e.g. mucositis, fatigue, pain, headache) correlated to a significantly improved quality of life. Adverse drug reactions to the sME treatment were mostly mild and self limiting. CONCLUSION:Complementary treatment with the sME HELIXOR proved to be beneficial for breast cancer patients since it significantly improved quality of life and significantly reduced persistant signs/symptoms of the disease/treatment during the validated aftercare period of approximately five years. ПАЦИЕНТЫ И МЕТОДЫ:Данные из 741 скрининг пациентов, удовлетворяющего критериям включения/исключения были проверены. Из них 681 пациенты имеют право на получение окончательного анализа исследовательской группы (с МСП n = 167) и контрольной группы (n = 514). Эффективность (развитие болезни/терапия-индуцированной признаки и симптомы; качество жизни) и безопасность (количество и тяжесть побочных реакций) дополнительного лечения в груди рак у пациентов, получавших МСП в послеоперационном периоде были определены. Результаты:Альтернативное лечение рака молочной рак пациенты с МСП при послеоперационном периоде приблизительно через 5 лет после прекращения Рекомендуемый стандарт терапии привело к значительно меньше (p < 0,001) жалобы больных (на 56,3% исследовательская группа против 70.0% в контрольной группе). Вывод:Дополнительное лечение с МСП HELIXOR оказались полезны для груди рак больных, поскольку оно существенно улучшилось качество жизни значительно снизило стойкие признаки/симптомы болезни/лечение во время проверки в послеоперационном периоде около пяти лет. AbstractBACKGROUND:In a prospective observational study, the impact of two different dose regimes of a commercially available fermented Viscum album L. extract (VA-E, Iscador) on the function of T lymphocytes from cancer patients was investigated. PATIENTS AND METHODS:A total of 71 cancer patients were enrolled. These patients attended two different sections of a tumor outpatient clinic which are used to apply different VA-E escalation schemes. Our hypothesis was that a rapid dose escalation of subcutaneously applied VA-E may induce strong local reactions at the injection side (>3 cm diameter) and may have an effect on the functional competence of T lymphocytes (mitogen-activated interleukin-2 receptor alpha chain), which was recorded over an observation period of six month. RESULTS:Within this observation period, a decline of stimulated T cell function was observed, particularly in patients with colorectal or prostate cancer; this decline was not seen in patients with breast cancer (who received lower mean concentrations per month) nor in patients with dose adaptation in response to too strong local reactions. CONCLUSION:With respect to T-cell function, our results indicate that in patients without local reactions, a long lasting mistletoe extract application should be withheld periodically to allow T-cell reactivity to recover. жүктеу/скачать 2.26 Mb.
