FOCUS FRONTING IN ‘ALL’-NEW UTTERANCES: EPP AND SECOND
POSITION EFFECTS
In
many natural languages, it is common to front an element that is not apparently the
semantic focus of the sentence to sentence initial position, known in recent terminology as the
clausal left periphery (Rizzi 1997 and subsequent work), with the
remnant focus part being
realized in-situ (i.e. in clause internal position). Such cases are encountered cross-linguistically:
Czech (1), German (2) and French (3). Focus fronting in these contexts is what some scholars
refer to as Subpart of Focus Fronting (SFF) (Fanselow & Lenertová 2011) given that what seems
to occupy the sentence initial position is not the whole semantic focus but its subpart. This has
raised so much interest in the linguistic literature, giving rise to
a long-standing debate on
whether the grammatical category of focus is triggered by syntactic factors or whether its
realization is simply linked to other independent factors such as pragmatics, prosody etc. (e.g.
Fanselow & Lenertová 2011).
