STYLISTIC ROLE AND FUNCTIONS OF AESTHETIC ONOMASTICS WITHIN
A FICTION (ON THE MATERIAL OF THE NOVELS BY G. FLAUBERT)
Currently in linguistics and literary studies the diversity of issues associated with the study
of onomastics in the language of fiction traditionally comes down to two aspects: 1) the
thematically marked system of the names of the fiction characters; 2) the stylistic expressive
means based on the use of some specific properties of the aesthetic onyms [2; 5].
The action of the most artistic works, regardless of their form and genre, is constructed
around the actions and the thoughts of certain individuals - their characters. A fiction character is
established in the minds of the readers by his/her appearance, behavior and speech. And if a
character is the successful creation of the author, in the view of the readers all his/her traits will
be associated with the only word - the name of the character able to evoke a certain image [1].
The study of the creative search of the writers clearly demonstrates the importance and the
significance of the process of choosing onomastics for the characters in the process of creating a
fiction. So, in the notes by G. Flaubert it is possible to find the eloquent testimony of how
carefully the author selected the names for the characters frequently changing their names
already in the process of working on the piece which was a guarantee of realistic creating of
specific artistic images [3; 4]. G. Flaubert often chose the real life onyms that had attracted him
with their expressive possibilities, that is in itself the key to the realism and the artistic credibility
of the images he created. However, the great master could not be limited to the restricted use of
the really available onomastics. Each name or naming in his works have received some stylistic
connotation the aim of which is deeper and more fully disclose the named character's nature.
So, in the novels by G. Flaubert "Madame Bovary" and "The Sentimental Education" by
the stylistic role within the fiction the following groups of aesthetic onyms may be distinguished:
