British and American families are small. In faction of both Britain and the USA have nearly stopped growing. In the old days, a "typical" family had a father, a mother and two or three children, with grandparents living near. Most children still live in this kind of family, but in both countries there is a growing number of "single parent families", with only one parent. Some parents are single because they are divorced, but many other young parents do not get married at all. A typical British family has a car, a colour TV set, a washing machine and a cat or dog as well. They start the day at about 7 o'clock, have breakfast at 8 and are off to work by 8.30. More and more women now go out to work as well as men. Children have lunch at school at about 12.30 and come home at 4 in the afternoon. Their parents are usually at home by 6 o'clock, and the family eats together at 6.30 or 7. In the evenings, father may go to the pub for a drink or stay at home and watch TV with the others. Young children go to bed early, at about 8 o'clock, two or three hours before their parents. A typical American family has more money than a British family. Some have two or three cars, large modern kitchens and more electrical goods. They eat more meat and spend more on clothes. But their daily programme is nearly the same. Like British children, American children eat lunch at school, come home in the mid-afternoon and go to bed earlier than their parents.

24. Прочитайте текст “FAMILY LIFE”, перекладіть.

Most young people eventually get married, buy or rent a house or a flat of their own and start a family. However, a great number of changes are taking place in this way of behaviour. As in many other Western European countries, more and more men and women are living together without being married. In the mid 1980s more than a quarter of new brides had lived with their husbands before marriage, compared with 8 per cent in 1970. People are also getting married later than they used to. However marriage is still popular even among those whose first marriage has failed. In fact, in 36 per cent of all marriages one or both partners have already been married and divorced. Britain now has the highest divorce rate in Europe and about 10 per cent of children live with only one parent.

Another trend is towards smaller households. Very few children now grow up in large families and more and more adults are living alone (25 per cent in 1987). Many of the people who live alone are elderly; it is unusual to find three generations living in one house as they used to do in the past. It is quite common for close relatives to live in different parts of the country and many people hardly ever meet their uncles, aunts and cousins. One reason for this is that British people move house every five years on average. They do this in order to change jobs or to buy a bigger or better house.

3. The Unhappy Man

I married a widow who had a grown-up daughter. My father visited us frequently, fell in love with my step-daughter and married her. Thus my own father became my son-in-law, and my step-daughter, being the wife of my father, became my mother. After some time my wife presented me with a son, -of course, he was my father's brother-in-law and my uncle, for he was the brother of my step-mother.

My father's wife, that is my step-daughter, had also a son, - of course, he was my brother, but at the same time he was also my grandson, for he was the son of my daughter. My wife was also my grandmother, being the mother of my mother.

I was the husband of my wife, but at the same time also her grandson, and since the husband of my grandmother is naturally also my grandfather, I am my own grandfather.... I should like to see the man who could bear all this.

4. My name is Tom Smiles. I'm the eldest of all the children. My second brother is Jack. The youngest is Michael. My younger sister is two years younger than me. Some time ago she got married. Her husband is Mr. Brown.

I have many relatives. My grandparents are dead. But I have a number of close and distant relatives: two uncles, four aunts and about a dozen cousins. One of my . cousins.. has lost her husband. She is a widow. An uncle of mine has been a widower. for many years, but he married recently. His wife is very kind to his mother-in-law and treats them as a real mother would do.

My second aunt has remained unmarried and therefore she is single lady. An uncle of mine has also remained single. He is an old bachelor.

The family in Britain are changing. In the past, peoples got married and stayed married. Divorce was very difficult, expensive and took a long time. Today, people's views on marriage are changing. Many couple, mostly in their twenties or thirties, lives together (cohabit) without getting married. Only about 60% of these couples will gets married.

In a past, people married before they had childrens, but now about 40% of childrens in Britain are born to unmarried (cohabiting) parents. In 2000, about the quarter of unmarried people between the ages of 16 and 59 were cohabiting in Great Britain.

People is getting married at a later age now and many woman do not want to has children immediately. They prefer to concentrate on their jobs and put off having a baby until late thirties.

36. Test

Most American families consist of a mother, a father and three or four children living at home. There may be relatives - grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and in-laws. This familial structure is known as the "nuclear family". It is unusual for members of the family other than the husband, wife and children to live together. The nuclear family unit is economically independent of the rest of the family.

In the American family the husband and wife usually share important decision. When the children are old enough, they participate. Americans believe that the person should have the freedom to decide the course of his or her life. Independence is highly valued in the United States.. Parents encourage their children to make choices from an early age: how to decorate their bedroom, how to spend money, or what camp they would like to attend. Young people are expected to break from their families by the time they have reached their late teens or early twenties.
