Reading for pleasure and reflection
A Wonderful Lamp

retold by Maryan Dingle

Once upon a time there lived Aladdin and his mommy in a little house because they were very poor.

Every day Aladdin played in the street with other boys. He was lazy and didn't work.

One day a man came along the road and watched Aladdin playing.

"Who are you?" he asked.

"I am Aladdin.” replied the boy.

"I am your uncle. ” said the man.

(You see, it wasn't true. That man was cruel wizard.)

Aladdin was so stupid and took the wizard home.

"Look here, mom.” he said. "Here is my uncle. He has arrived from Africa.

"I don't remember my husband's brother. You have lost your mind. Go,, poor man. Don't make yourself laugh at”

"Oh, my god! I loved my brother very much, but you don't put up with new relative

"OK. I'll fetch food and we all will have supper together. Then we'll solve everything".

“Aladdin, I am your uncle and I want to buy some beautiful clothes for you.

Aladdin and his mother were very pleased. The next day Aladdin and the wizard went to the market. The wizard bought some beautiful clothes for Aladdin, and Aladdin was very pleased.

Then they went for a long walk. They walked along a stony path. Aladdin was tired and hot. After some time they came to the bottom of a hill.

"We'll stop here.” said the wizard. "You fetch some wood and make a fire.”

Aladdin collected some wood and he made a big fire.

The Wizard threw something in the fire and made a magic spell. The ground shook, and there was a lot of noise and smoke.

Aladdin was very frightened. Suddenly a hole opened in the ground. At the bottom of the hole there was a big stone.

"Under that stone there is a lamp, said the wizard.

"Go down and fetch it. Here is my ring to keep you safe.”

Aladdin took the wizard's ring, and went into the hole. He lifted the stone, and saw some steps. Aladdin went down the steps.

He came to a beautiful garden.

In the garden there were a lot of trees covered with wonderful jewels. There were red, blue, green, yellow and white jewels.

They were all very big and they sparkled in the sun. At the end of the garden there was a wall. There was a lamp hanging on the wall. Aladdin climbed a ladder and took down the lamp. He put the lamp inside his shirt. Then he picked a lot of jewels from the trees in the garden. He put them into the pockets. Then he put more jewels inside his shirt on top of the lamp.

Then he hurried back to the wizard.

The jewels were heavy, and Aladdin could not climb the steps.

The Wizard asked for the lamp. It was under the jewels, and Aladdin could not reach it.

The Wizard was very angry because he wanted the lamp. He did not help Aladdin. He made a magic spell, and the stone came down and shut Aladdin in the hole. Aladdin was alone in the dark. He was very frightened. Aladdin shouted for help, but nobody heard. He cried and rubbed his hands together.

He rubbed the wizard's ring on his finger. Suddenly a big ugly Jinn appeared.

"Who are you?" cried Aladdin. "That ring is magic.” replied the Jinn.

"I am the slave of the Ring. What do you want?"

"I want to get out of here,” said Aladdin.

"All right .” replied the Jinn. Suddenly the earth opened. Aladdin was outside in the sun again. He was very happy and ran home quickly to his mother.

Aladdin told his mother about his adventures. He showed her the jewels and the lamp. "That man was not my uncle.” said Aladdin. "He was a bad Wizard.”

Aladdin was hungry, but there was no food because his mother had no money. Suddenly he had an idea. "I shall sell the lamp.” he said, "and buy some food.” "That is a good idea.” said Aladdin's mother. "I shall clean the lamp first.”

She rubbed the lamp with sand. Suddenly a Jinn appeared. He was very big and ugly. Aladdin's mother was frightened.

"That lamp is magic.” said the Jinn.

"I am the slave of the lamp. What do you want?

"We want some food.” said Aladdin.

"All right.” replied the Jinn, and he brought a tray of wonderful food.

The tray and all the plates were made of gold. Aladdin and his mother ate the food and were very happy. When they had finished the food, Aladdin said, "I shall go to the market and sell a plate. Then I'll buy more food.” In the morning Aladdin went to the market with a gold plate. He sold it for some money. Then he bought some food. Every time that they wanted money, Aladdin went to the market and sold a plate. One day Aladdin went to the market, but all the shops were shut.

"Why are all the shops shut?" asked Aladdin.

"Because the Princess is going to her bath.” said a man, "and nobody must look at her.” Aladdin thought, "I should like to see the Princess because she is beautiful

Aladdin hid behind a door. The Princess and her friends came to the bath.

Then the Princess took off her veil. She was very beautiful. Aladdin saw her and said, "She is very beautiful. I want to marry. Aladdin ran home.

"Mother.” he said, "I saw the Princess. She is very beautiful, and I want to marry her. Please go to the Sultan and ask if I may marry the Princess. Take these jewels and give them to the Sultan!"

The next day Aladdin's mother went to the Palace. She gave the jewels to the Sultan.

"Thank you.” he said. "What do you want?"

"Please,” replied Aladdin's mother, "may my son marry the Princess?"

The Sultan thought. Then he said, "Yes, but he must wait four months!"

One month later Aladdin's mother went to the market. Everybody was having a holiday. All the shops were shut, and there were flags over the road.

"What is the holiday for?" asked Aladdin's mother.

"The Princess is being married today.” replied a man. "She is marrying the Vizier's son.” Aladdin's mother was very angry. She ran home.

"Aladdin.’ she said, "the Sultan has forgotten you. The Princess is marrying the Vizier's son.” Aladdin had an idea. He waited until it was dark; then he rubbed the magic lamp. The Jinn appeared.

"Go and fetch the Princess and the Vizier's son on their beds.” he said to the Jinn. The Jinn fetched the beds with the Princess and the Vizier's son.

Then he put the Vizier's son in a cupboard and blew cold air on him. The Vizier's son was very cold and uncomfortable. The Princess was very frightened.

"Do not be frightened.” said Aladdin to the Princess. "You are safe here.”

In the morning Aladdin rubbed the magic lamp, and the Jinn appeared.

He told the Jinn to take the beds back to the Palace. The Jinn put the Vizier's son with the Princess on the bed. Then he picked up the bed and took it back to the Palace. That morning the Sultan went to see the Princess.

"What is the matter?" he asked.

The Princess told him about her adventure.

"I am unhappy and afraid.” she said.

"I don't want to be married.”

"All right.” said the Sultan, "you won’t marry. The holiday will stop.”

After three months Aladdin's mother went to the Palace again. She saw the Sultan.

"Please may my Aladdin marry the Princess?" she asked.

"Yes.” said the Sultan, "but first he must send forty girls with forty bowls of big jewels to the Princess.” That night Aladdin rubbed the magic lamp, and the Jinn appeared. He told the Jinn to fetch forty girls and forty gold bowls full of jewels. Soon the Jinn brought the girls. They were all very beautiful and wore lovely clothes. Each girl had a gold bowl full of big jewels. The jewels sparkled like stars. In the morning Aladdin's mother took the girls and the jewels to the Sultan. Everybody in the street stopped and looked at the beautiful girls and the jewels. The Sultan was very pleased with Aladdin's present.

"Go and tell Aladdin to come to me," he said.

The next day Aladdin rubbed the lamp again and the Jinn appeared.

"Bring me servants, beautiful clothes, and horses.” said Aladdin.

When they came, Aladdin dressed and got on a white horse. He rode to the Palace with twenty-four servants in front of him, and twenty-four servants behind him. They were all very handsome, and they threw money to everybody in the street. The Sultan thought that Aladdin was very clever and very handsome.

"You may marry the Princess now.” he said.

"No.” said Aladdin. "First I must build a beautiful palace.”!

At night Aladdin rubbed the magic lamp and told the Jinn to build a big and beautiful palace. Next morning the Sultan woke up and looked out of his window. He saw Aladdin's palace. It was very beautiful and sparkled in the sun. That day Aladdin and the Princess were married. All the people had a holiday, and they were very happy. Aladdin and the Princess went to live in the beautiful palace. Aladdin loved the Princess very much.

One day the bad wizard came back to town. He saw Aladdin's palace and asked, "Who lives there?"

"Aladdin lives there,” a man replied, "with the Princess.”

This made the wizard very angry because he thought Aladdin was dead.

"Aladdin has the magic lamp.” he thought.

"I'll take it from him. The wizard went to a shop and bought a lot of new lamps. He put them in a basket and went out into the street.

"I'll give you a new lamp for your old one.” he shouted. Everybody fetched their old lamps, and the wizard gave them new ones.

Soon the wizard came to Aladdin's palace. "I will give you a new lamp for your old one.” he shouted. The Princess heard him. "I'll find Aladdin's old lamp.” she said. "That man'll give me a new one. She didn't know about magic spells of Aladdin's lamp. The Princess fetched Aladdin's lamp. She gave it to the wizard, and the wizard gave her a new lamp. So a greedy wizard got a magic lamp. That night the wizard rubbed the magic lamp, and the Jinn appeared.

"What do you want?"

"Take Aladdin's palace and put it in my place! "I will.”

He lifted Aladdin's palace and took it to Africa. In the morning the Sultan woke up and looked out of his window. He rubbed his eyes.

"Where is Aladdin's palace and the Princess?" "We don't know. We are your servants and were near your bed all night.”

"Make Aladdin a prisoner and bring him to mе.” Some soldiers found Aladdin and made him a prisoner. They took him to the Sultan who was very angry.

"What is the matter? Where is the palace and the Princess? I want to know about it!"

"May I look for the palace?"

"Yes, go fast.”

Aladdin looked for the palace everywhere but... One night he sat down and cried and rubbed his hands together. He rubbed the ring on his finger. Suddenly the Slave of the Ring appeared.

"What do you want?"

"I'd forgotten you. Take me to my palace.”

The Jinn took him to Africa and put him down near the palace. Aladdin saw his Princess.

"Aladdin, are you here? Take me home!"

"Oh! The Princess, I love you. I've come for you, honey."

Aladdin ordered the Slave of the Ring to put the wizard into the can, and took the lamp and the Princess home. The Princess was happy to be with Aladdin again. Soon Aladdin became Sultan, really strong and brave man.
